Summary: If you are stump sitter, this book is not for you
Review: If you track or stalk deer then you can learn a lot from this book. The Benoit's are quite remarkable with their year over year successes. However, if you are a stand hunter or hunt in private land areas that don't allow tresspassers then this book is basically worthless other than the nice pictures in it.

Summary: A must read for serious big buck hunters
Review: It is one thing to shoot a trophy buck. It's even more amazing to shoot them year after year. This is just what the Benoits do and keep in mind it is being done in Maine. This makes it an even bigger accomplishment. If you have hunted Maine like myself, you know what I'm talking about. The big bucks up there are far and few, yet the Benoits are able to "read" the area and thus find moss backs every year. Even if you are an experienced hunter, you can be humbled quite quickly when hunting in Maine. This book details hunts in which bucks were tracked for many miles, offers many tips on how to read tracks, and when and where the bucks are going. If you want to learn more about big woods bucks, this book is for you.

Summary: Average Book.
Review: The book does a good job outlining the tracking methods that the Benoits use to consistently harvest large bucks. There are also several interesting stories of deer hunting adventures within the book.

These tracking methods are regional in nature and not very useful in the midwest where I primarily hunt. For anyone who hunts from a stand, this book will be a dissapointment.

I read the book from my local library rather than purchasing it and I am glad that I did.

Overall, it is a good read but not worth the money unless you hunt in the northeast like the Benoits.

Summary: A must for northwoods hunters
Review: This book is one of the best true hunting books I ever read! The Benoits are the True first family in deer hunting and as a north woods hunter myself I have learned lots from reading this book. This book is not about sitting in a tree stand all day or electronic trail timers or other high tech deer hunting ambush aids its about true hunting...tracking the most wise buck in the world..the northwoods buck !

Summary: A must have for Hunters in the N.E or any place else !
Review: This book was very informative and entertaining at the same time. I could not put the book down once I started to read.A must have for the average hunter, with out the money to pay for a guided hunt. The Benoits and the author did a excellent job putting this book together. Can not say enough about how detailed they got in explaining, why they did things, how they did them, the cloths they used, the choice of guns and loads etc.

Summary: Best deer hunting guide I've read
Review: This is a detailed guide for aspiring deerstalkers, with a number of hints for stand dwellers as well, although the focus is on stalking and tracking. This is the most comprehensive book on the subject that I have read, the next best thing to having the author(s) take you out hunting.

Summary: Exceptional entertainment source.
Review: This is an accurate depiction of the conditions of the North woods and the difficulty associated with whitetail hunting in that geography. The author might have provided additional photographs to depict the density of cedar swamps and blow down areas and just how impassable those areas seem to a hunter tracking a whitetail. I suppose a picture might not depict the associated purgatory with following a buck through that environment, but I am certain the Benoits didn't levitate above such areas in their pursuit of this most elusive game. Apparently the Benoits are a tight lipped crew as most succesful deer hunting associations are. The author did his best with the information he obtained from the Benoit family and their hunting associates but it seems that with as much hunting history as the Benoits possessed there would have been more enlightening and amusing anecdotes. I understand that as rigorously as the Benoits hunt they are likely exhausted when they return to camp, but it would seem that each day there were bound to be entertaining stories as to how they were educated by the whitetail. I appreciate the challenge of a whitetail hunt, but the importance of the ultimate kill wanes in comparison to the comraderie of deer hunters and the hunting camp lifestyle. I recognize that the author took full advantage to chronicle the expertise of this hunting family and their shared hunting knowledge. However, I got the gut feeling from reading the book that the author although invited to stay at the camp and write the book was never accepted into the Benoit hunting clique. That is no insult to the author as hunting cliques are often more difficult to gain acceptance in than segregated southern golf courses. I could not put the book down and that is the ultimate praise to the author. I have already sent the book to certain of my hunting colleagues and they praise it also. The Benoit's success rate is unquestioned. Comically, when myself and one of my hunting colleagues were discussing the book we both chuckled and agreed that the Benoits were either widowed or frequently divorced as we were certain that no woman on earth permitted their husband to spend the entire deer hunting season away from home. On that note if the author ever writes another book on a similar topic he should have a chapter desiganted entirely to nonhunting issues that make whitetailed hunters return to the north woods year after year whether they harvest a whitetail or not. This chapter should be titled "How to sell the hunt to your SPOUSE" and should contain colored photographs of the beauty of a hunt in the North woods after a four inch smowfall. The pictorals should include photographs of live wildlife against a magnificent white backdrop. I do not know about your wife but mine is rarely impressed with my photos of a dead deer being dragged out in the snow or hanging from a game pole. She usually looks at me as if I am the progeny of Charles Manson. I am certain you have experienced as I have the breathtaking beauty associated with reaching the summit of a wooded hill in the north woods while on the track of a buck. You are exhausted, sweating and simultaneously exhilirated at the breathtaking panoramic views before you. Whether in the vicinity of Kathadin, Sugarloaf, Battie or Squa Pan the views are often unforgettable and you don't have to be on a mountain top to have your breath taken away. Spend a week on the shores of the Allagash, St.John or Big Black Rivers with an experienced photographer and the results will be unforgettable. The last time I had an opportunity to be in the north woods I shot a roll of film of the landscape after a light snowfall. The film was directed primarily at scrapes and topography so I could share the same with certain of my hunting colleagues in New Hampshire who had not been there. I realized upon reviewing the photos that, in fact, it was the background of the hunting photos that was alluring and mystifiying. This book is a wonderful heirloom and the author and the Benoits should be very proud. I expect another will soon be forthcoming and I anxiously await it's arrival.
