Rating: Summary: counting coup Review: counting coup was an exciting book, that once I've gotten past the third chapter. It started slow at first put then it picked up after a while. I almost stop reading it because of the fact that the first few chapters didn't get my attention, but I'm glad I didn't because I would of missed out on a wonderful story. sharon went through a whole lot wheter it was teammates, and even family problems .This book had a lot of situations that I've been in one way or another. on point when sharon's coach had to deal with her stress, reminded me of my highschool coach, she was a tough lady, and a wonderfull coach at the same time. she just have few loose ends needed to be tied. I think this will have an effect on students and greatly on student athlete because it will walk them through sharon's experiences and how she dealt with them. No matter how hard the situations were she found a way to overcome them in the end. so if you want to explore what sharons senior year was about go ahead and check the book out. it will be an experience that you will not regret.
Rating: Summary: Culture meets modern day life Review: This book was assigned to me in my Reading Improvement class and my first thought was boring! I began reading it then it became so interesting I couldn't put it down. It relates mainly to Indian culture as well as basketball. During my reading I found myself wanting to scream; I felt I should have been at the game with a foam finger. The neat thing about this book was that it was based on a true story. During the middle of the book, it was nice to see the pictures of the people you were reading about. It was also nice to learn about some of the things that the Crow tribe did as traditions. I recommend this book highly and I think it would definitely be enjoyable. If you have ever been a part of a group whether it be a dance group or a track team, I suggest you look into this book. It will definitely keep your interests.
Rating: Summary: Sharon the Survivor Review: Counting Coup is a wonderful strory about the life of the Crow Indians. The interesting life of Sharon Laforge, the star basketball player and her journey to win a state championship. Although a very talented athlete, Sharon unfortunately didn't receive the support that a young girl her age needed to be successful in life. Counting Coup is a great book and I recommend it to everyone. It gives insight of how other cultured live and interact with one another. The author did a great job of introducing the main character and did a wonderful job in describing the games, play by play. A wondereful book to be shared by all. It is highly recommended.
Rating: Summary: Counting Coup review Review: Sharon LaForge, a young woman in a place where opportunities are rare, has successfully made it through a rough senior year. Her success didn't come easy; she had to endure many trial and error stages in her life but at the end, Sharon made it. Through her tedious times, she endured alcoholism of a close relative, her mother. The love of her grandparents played a big role in her life, showing her how to love. And the phase Sharon went through her senior year at Hardin High. The last phase of her life was crucial, was the drinking and smoking she accepted in her life. During her senior year, Sharon began to to same thing she hated her mother doing. But she did make it, not the way she had intended it to be but she did. I highly recommend this book to readers who loves emotions.
Rating: Summary: Counting Coup Review: Before reading Counting Coup, I thought it would be just another boring girls basketball story. This book proved to me that there is more to womens basketball then what you watch during a game. This shows just how important working together is if you want to accomplish something great. Towards the beginning of their season, the team was winning with ease as they worked as one. Unfortunately for Coach Mac and her team, they started to play their own individual game and not what Coach Mac taught them to play. Many of the characters in this book, encounter many problems as the try to reach their goal which is the State Championship. I recommend this book for those who are in a sport and need the inspiration to excel.
Rating: Summary: Affects on a SWT student Review: Normally this wouldn't be a book that I would just pick and read out of the blue. Although it was assigned reading it turned out to be a good literary description of the life on the Crow reservation. It showed the adverse situations in which the characters had to endeavor throughout their everyday lives. There were a few aspects in this book that kept me on the edge and made me want to continue reading. They were the Crow way of life in itself, Coach Mac's trials and tribulations as a high school coach, and most of all Sharon's uphill battle with her life. The author did a great job of telling all sides of what he observed in his time on the reservation in Montana. He clearly painted a picture in my mind of what was going on which made me want to know what was going to happen next. I thought he went the extra mile by informing the readers of what each and every girl did after high school. Everyone whom he wrote about should be pleased with his work. If I was a writer I would like to do something along the lines of what he did. It's always good to learn someone elses culture and accept it for what it is. I would reccommend this book to anyone. It will leave you with nothing less than pure satisfaction.
Rating: Summary: A trama Review: Wow This book is so awesome! I enjoyed reading it, it was an assignment for my reading class. I enjoyed this book because it took me to the rez with Larry and it introduced me to thier lifestyle. I was amazed at the different aspects of life that they as a culture look at life. I really enjoyed this book and the story it told because I was drawn to read this book not only did the author explain in detail the relation ships that was made beteen the youths and the way they react to the peer pressures of life. I also enjoyed the way that these children were affected by Larry being intamate with the team. I also feel that the book was a look on the different ways american people live eventhough we all live in the same nation we can live our lives so differently. Also I enjoyed that the author was able to include the comical aspects of his and everyone relationships.
Rating: Summary: What does it mean? Review: Before reading Counting Coup,I had no idea what the term "counting coup" meant. Since this book was related to basketball, I assumed it dealt with counting the wins and losses of basketball games. After reading, I found out it was more in depth than just counting wins and losses. "There were four primary ways to accomplish a coup: touch an enemy in battle, steal an enemy's horse, lead a successful war party, or capture an enemy's weapon. Of these, the bravest was to touch an enemy-not kill him-but touch him on the chest." To accomplish coup is an honor. The Indians do this for glory and dignity. I engoyed Counting Coup. It is a great book full of basketball, triumphs, victories, tears, laughs, and success.
Rating: Summary: Couting Coup a real life story Review: Counting Coup is a extrodinary book. It tells the hardships of life as a minority. Shorn is a quite girl but has a lot of talent. She definatly is good athelte.
Rating: Summary: Wow Review: This book grabs the reader and makes you ask, what's happened since? The author has crafted the facts in such a way that the reader is immersed in the situation and the lives of the individuals on and around the reservation at the Little Big Horn. You find yourselve hoping against all odds for some of the kids to beat the odds. Some do. Some don't. A fine book that stays with you.
