Rating: Summary: disappointment Review: I have purchased the book trusting that it is part of brasilian jujitsu series. Compared to other books of the series, photos are not clear at all, explanations are not good, and I am in martial arts over 20 years, I could not see what is for experts. If you want an advanced book get J.J.Machado's one. The jello guard is probably invented just for having invented something. The jujitsu techniques are not advanced at all and the division of the book as jujitsu, submission wrestling, and vale tudo, leaves very little space for the techniques of each group, reducing the book to a mediocre technical level, with few techniques.
Do not forget that Sperry, Bustamante, and others are not with him any more. I regret having purchased it.
Rating: Summary: Great addition for any Jiu Jitsu or Judo Collection Review: The book is laid out very well and a great resource for any ground fighters judo or jiu jitsu.
The Jello guard is also known and the Dela Riva guard and is a very effective guard and tournament tested. Ricardo De La Riva is one of the greatest jiu Jitsukas of all time mostly due to his revolutionary guard game.
Overall I am impressed with the techniques, and only had one small concern as some of the moves aren't as detailed in script.
Rating: Summary: Carlson Gracie style Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Review: This book is divided into three sections: Sport jiu jitsu, vale tudo and submission grappling. Each section shows about thirty of Carlson's favorite techniques.
This book shows how Carlson Gracie jiu jitsu differs from other styles of BJJ, emphasizing a strong top game, guard passing and chokes.
"For Experts Only" is a bit of a misnomer of a title. Anyone who's had a year of experience in BJJ can benefit from reading this book.
Rating: Summary: Good, but not as good as one would believe Review: This is one of the most recent books in the BJJ series and is again a nicely put together book, as are all the others in the series. But for the first time, it looks like the Gracies are taking a page out of Gene Simco's book BJJ: The Master Text, by copying his format, and dividing the book up into sections (which the Gracie's have been critisized on in the past), with sport BJJ (with gi), submission grappling, and MMA techniques.
I felt the book was organized well, with good, clear pictures, and with decent instructions. I think that if someone has a good foundation in grappling already, these moves shouldn't be too hard to learn from the book.
The first sections dealt with the history of BJJ from Carlson's point of view, and a little about the differnet ways of training BJJ, namely sport BJJ, submission grappling, and MMA.
The technqiues presented, I'm sorry to say, are not exactly "expert" by any means. There were some very basic techniques shown, along with some more advanced moves, but not enough, I think to be called a "for experts only" manual.
Even though there are some impressive advanced moves I've never seen, I just don't think it has enough new information for anyone who's been training in grappling for a while, or already has several BJJ books; much of information and technique overlap, except you just learn Carlson Gracie's viewpoint, on techniques as well as the development of BJJ in the beginning sections.
