Summary: Bocce is an engaging sport for everyone.
Review: Hi bocce friends (I never met a bocce player I didn't like). I'm not a great player, but I love the game with the passion of a world-class competitor. My contribution has been assembling the information on skills development, strategy, rules, etc. and landing a publisher to bring the book to press. I interviewed expert as well as recreational players and put together the same kind of instructional guide that you might use to learn basketball, baseball, soccer, or hockey.

One of the neatest things about bocce is that it can bring families together. An eighty year-old grandparent can play with an eight year-old grandchild and be on relatively equal terms - try that with hockey or soccer! Another big plus for bocce is that it is the fastest growing sport in Special Olympics, because anyone who can roll a ball can play.

I am fascinated by variations of play in different parts of the USA (most of the world seems to have standardized the game, not yet so here in America). I'm also intrigued by the unique terms players devise for different facets of the game (on the south side of Chicago, they "toots it up" when they want to tap one of their previously played bocce balls closer to the pallino to secure the point). A player from Massachusetts might direct his teammate to take his green ball and make a "Visine" when the other team's red ball is snuggling close to the object ball (a Visine "gets the red out"). E-mail strikerpag@aol.com. with your play variations or bocce terminology.

Summary: Everything you wanted to know about this sport
Review: The Joy of Bocce is an excellent book for everyone, from the novice to the expert, who wish to play this game. Pagnoni explains, in detail, the rules of the game, the different types of shots, the playing surface, strategy, even practicing. Most importantly, it describes the different types of play for both recreational bocce and professional bocce. There is even instructions on how to build your own bocce court. Anyone interested in learning about this sport, or anyone who would like to learn more about this sport, should pick up a copy of this book. A complete manual about playing the game.

Summary: the best book out there, from the best guy out there
Review: This book has all you need to know about this sport. I love this book. As a rookie in this sport, i feel that this book helped me and my team win the northern Massachusetts bocce state title. This is a great book for all ages and playing needs

Summary: Good book, but lacking some critical information
Review: While Pagnoni's book contains a lot of interesting facts about the game of bocce, it fails to mention the World Series of Bocce, a multi-day event that draws teams from several states and Canada to Rome, NY, every July. A mention -- if not some recent results and/or pictures -- would have made the book much more complete.
