Review: Having "been there and done that" for over 22 years I can tell you that John Massaro's book is right on the money. John has been in the trenches and everything he's written about will happen to every umpire if he stays with it long enough. Someday, years from now, something weird in baseball will happen to you and you will remember that you read it here first. John puts his good sense of humor to use as he treks through his experiences. He will have you laugh out loud sometimes as he describes a situation that's just unbelievable. Throughout the book references are made about the honor of the profession that will make you feel good about yourself. He interjects stories throughout the book about some of the old umpires and players in situations that will bring a smile to your face. John adds pieces talking about feminism, racism, and gays. If he were a nationally known figure or celebrity the media would vilify him for not being politically correct. When he talks about women umpires your eyes might widen a bit, but, you know what, it's his book and he shoots from the hip. He backs up his opinions with logic and you can't help but agree with a lot of his views. If you are thinking of being an umpire, buy this book. If you have been umpiring for a few years, buy this book. If you are a 20 year vet, but this book. You will get one more thing from this book. You will like the author (and huckster) when you are finished and will say "John, I'd love to do a game with you".
