Rating: Summary: What cars would you buy if money were no object? Review: Nick Mason used to be famous for being the drummer with Pink Floyd, today that fame has been overtaken by his reputation as one of the formost car collectors in the world. He owns the last car Enzo ever raced, the first one Giles Villnerve won a GP in and 19 other remarkable cars. Mark Hales is an accomplished racing driver and journalist. Together they have taken Nick's stable to the limit around Silverstone and given the reader a feeling for how cars have progressed and what it is like to be at the wheel of an historic racing car.
Rating: Summary: beautiful, humorous, thrilling Review: Recently I bought the UK-version of this book. It is called 'Into the Red' and comes with a CD with sounds of the sportscars described in the books. I agree with all other reviewers: this CD plus book is a must-have. The pictures in the book are beautiful, the text by Mason and Hales is technically, humorously and very interesting to read. Even if you are not full into racingcars, this is still a very nice book to have in your bookcase !
Rating: Summary: Carnography! Review: Sell your grandmother, send the wife out to work, auction yourkids:- Go out and buy this.Loads of lustful photo's of glorious oldracing machines with Nick Mason's anecdotes, wonderfully put together, which means that any-one remotely interested in cars will be foaming at the mouth after 5 minutes with this book. ... Fantastic!!!
Rating: Summary: Great book MISSING SOMETHING Review: The UK version has a CD that lets you hear all the cars except 2 or 3. Get it from Motorbooks UK and you will get the CD...worth the wait!! Amazon..can you get us the REAL book?
Rating: Summary: A 'must have' BUT ... Review: This book is outstanding. Nick Mason's brief account of each car's history and how he came to buy it is interesting and often humorous and Mark Hales' account of the driving experience conveys great feeling. The photography is also of very high quality. BUT you must buy one that comes with the CD, the book is titled 'Into the Red' outside the USA. Listening to the CD (loud!) while reading the book is an awesome experience which should not be missed. Particularly track 5, the V16 BRM, the sound of which will make the hairs stand up on the back of your neck!
Rating: Summary: The ultimate Christmas present for petrolheads Review: This has got to be the ultimate Christmas present for those'hard to buy for' dads, granddads, brothers, sons, nephews, boyfriendsand of course any car-crazy females you know. In fact Nick Mason's wonderful anecdotes are a joy to read even if you're not particularly interested in cars! Mark Hales has driven the cars to their limit and gives an illuminating insight into what it's like to drive these racing machines. It's also a beautifully designed book with some stunning pictures and a bookshelf is certainly missing something if it doesn't contain this. Buy, buy, buy....
Rating: Summary: Superb book - but what's this about no CD in the USA? Review: This is among the best car books I've ever seen. The photography is all new - no recycled press photos you've seen over and over. The writing style is clear and evocative of the best story telling. It could have been published as 21 monthly articles in Road & Track. The tone is friendly without being silly. It contains technical information without getting hopelessly bogged down in minutiae. HOWEVER - as I was reflecting how cool it would be to download audio recordings of these cars in action (imagining a website) I read that the UK version comes with a CD! Why isn't this in the US version? As the Buddhists say, all suffering stems from desire... Now if I could only buy (and maintain!) my fantasy Chaparral and Ford GT-40 and Ferrari Daytona and Mini-Cooper S and Lotus 21 and Jaguar D Type and supercharged Bugatti and Porsche 911 and Cobra and Buell superbike...
