Summary: Indispensable
Review: For years, from April through October, I always have my old dog-eared copy handy. Baseball is all about the little details, and there are so many of them that, no matter how big a fan of the game you are, you can always get stumped. This Dickson Dictionary goes much further than just defining terms...it gives examples, cites history, and provides some truly wonderful photos. The last time I referred to it, I was trying to learn the finer points of the infield fly rule. Usually, though, I use it to identify which is the slider, which is the breaking ball, which is the sinker, etc. This book is exhaustive. Living in L.A., I've got Dickson as my baseball reference and Vin Scully as my baseball poet. I'd say all the bases are covered. Now if we can only get those Dodgers to make the playoffs...

Summary: to know America, you must know baseball
Review: One more thing: interesting and fun even for the non-fan, the book gives fascinating etymologies of baseball terms now standard in American English.

Rating: 5 stars
Summary: Essential for real understanding of the American language.
Review: The "New Dickson Baseball Dictionary" is more than just "new". Its 7,000 entries (compared with 5,000 in the original Dickson dictionary published 10 years ago) include all that Dickson overlooked, forgot, missed, muffed and fumbled his first time at bat. It also includes a lot of words that came in play in recent years. If you know a foreigner who is studying American English, this book is a great gift, for it is truly a key to the American language. As Dickson makes so clear, nothing has given so much color, flavor and uniqueness to the American language as baseball.

Summary: The New Dickson Baseball Dictionary is meant for many.
Review: The New Dickson Baseball Dictionary is a compilation of some 7,000 terms used in the great game. It is a major overhaul, update and enlargement of my original dictionary which came out alomost ten years ago. Like any other reference book, one is always working to improve what one has done. Making the dictionary "just right" has involved many other experts and helpers One thing that it has in common with the first edition is that it a lot of fun to read, use and browse through. The book originally began when I took my kids to a baseball game and we could not find a good baseball dictionary. Creating this work became a labor of love and remains just that. What was the most fun to determine -- and I think the most fun to read -- are the histories of terms like fan, fungo, on deck, doubleheader and many others. Finally, I have written this book with the idea that one learning the game will get as much use from it as one who knows a lot about the game.

Summary: Clear, Concise, Helpful
Review: This baseball dictionary is clear, concise and helpful, particularly for people like me. I love baseball, but when I was growing up, girls weren't raised on sports, so I became a fan with sketchy knowledge of the rules and nuances of the game. Since I bought this book, I've learned a lot about pitching maneuvers, stats, history of the sport, slang terms and dozens of other things that make baseball more and more interesting to watch. I'm very glad I own it.

Summary: Best baseball book I've ever read.
Review: This book is a must-have for anyone from the casual to the hardcore fan
