Summary: A book for me and my dad!
Review: Kalb's "Who's Better, Who's Best in Basketball?" is a great book for Sixers fans like myself and basketball fans in general. The stuff on Chamberlain is mind boggling. I love the fact that Iverson is ahead of McGrady. Moses Malone ahead of Doctor J??? This book is all me and my friends talk about. I caught my girlfriend reading it, too, to have something to talk to me about. This book is cheaper than most CDs--and is definitely worth the money!

Summary: Give it a rest, MJ fans!
Review: Man, it was refreshing to see Shaq get his props. But more than that, listen to the man--this book has got some great arguments and brings up games and playoff series that bring you back to what you were feeling when those games were being played. Did anyone see the All Star Game? Kalb had the star of stars pegged! If the Lakers win it this year; it's because of the big guy. He is the difference in the entire league. But, back to the book. This guy is obviously a Celtics fan. He puts Cousy ahead of West??? DeBusschere isn't even in the top 50? Bird ahead of Magic? But you know--I'd love to debate him on those and other issues. He's like some guy you meet in a bar, and want to talk sports with all night. Buy the book, and see for yourself. This is a must-read.

Summary: nonsense
Review: Placing Shaq as the #1 player of all-time immediately disqualifies this book's credability. To say that a player who can barely make a free-throw and has made a 3-point shot -- what, once? -- in his career is the best ever is non-sense. Even worse than that is the over-reliance on statistics. Now, I'm not necessarily saying MJ should be #1 on the list (though he's a definite contendor).

But Shaq shouldn't even be a contender for #1, for several reasons, most of which has to do with personal will and determination. Shaq's been known as a whiner, and has done many things which have harmed his team (like putting off surgery until the last minute). I'm sorry, unless a player goes out there with 100% every night, he's not even a candidate for the best ever. The most important quality is whether or not the player is a winner, and how much of a winner he is. Now, I'm not saying that Championships should be the sole determination (by that measure, Wilt Chamberlain would be near the bottom of the top 50, not the top). But, I am saying that the player's personal will to win, and overall affect on the rest of his team, are.

A simple way to put it would be, if you had to choose, who would you choose? Anyone who would choose Shaq over MJ or Bill Russel would be nuts, for a couple of reasons. (1) Both of those players were more talented than Shaq. (2) You could count on both of those players to put in 100+% every night, you can't count on Shaq for that.

Put another way, does anyone honestly think that a team of 5 Shaq's would beat a team of five Russel's, five Jordan's, or even five Magic Johnson's? No, it wouldn't.

Summary: Who's Better than Kalb? No one. His book is the best!
Review: This book is great for college dorms to settle arguments and shoot the breeze. I learned a lot about the older players, and the book is a great read. I recommend it highly. Being a Rockets fan, I loved the Hakeem Olajuwon chapter!

Review: Very nicely written, and I agree with your assessment of Shaquille O'Neal and Wilt. I would have flopped Michael Jordan and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, but it's a minor quibble. I really enjoyed the last chapter, when the author discussed who had to leave out, and why. He made excellent points.

Summary: Mr. Stats (Elliott Kalb) is a blast!!!
Review: We love Elliott Kalb's book, "Who's Better, Who's Best in Basketball?" It's very entertaining. We will surely buy this book as Christmas gifts for our basketball enthusiats relatives.

Rating: 5 stars
Summary: the best Christmas present
Review: When I first picked up the book, I saw Shaq as the #1 NBA player of all time, and I said "are you kidding me?" Well, Elliott Kalb isn't kidding, and he makes a great case for O'Neal that I hadn't thought of. Time and time again in this book, you'll read arguments which you haven't though of. Rodman as one of the top 50 players? Walt Frazier behind George Gervin? Chamberlain ahead of Russell? MICHAEL JORDAN AS #3!!?? My friends, co-workers, and I can't stop arguing about these choices. But one thing is for certain: if you read the arguments, you'll be better prepared to defend or attack your position. The research is as in-depth as you'll ever see on a sports book. Like Kalb's ratings or not, you'll be talking about the contents of this book throughout the NBA season.
