Summary: Solid up to date research on sports nutrition and health
Review: A very interesting book. Excellent documentation with basic explanations of underlying chemistry of nutrition and how the human body adapts to various forms of stress which are part of athletic training. The finer points of the book which distinguish it from other sports nutrition books illuminate the relationships between hormone system response and the repair and growth of muscle for speed and enduance. Anabolic Steroids are not needed because with the correct nutritional / excersize regime the human body will produce a strong, balanced hormonal response which will do everything and more to enhance performance than self-administered anabolics with none of the negative side effects. Good Book

Summary: Fantastic! Colgan is the best in the business!!
Review: A wonderfully complete guide to reaching your athletic potential. No stone is left unturned and no power is too established to escape Colgan's burning humor. He tells it like it is like no other writers on the subject. Highly recommended and I look forward to reading more of his work.

Rating: 5 stars
Summary: A Classic. This is the definitive work for sports nutrition
Review: An incisive work. Required reading. Supported by an extensive bibliography, this book provides all the information you need regarding athletic performance and nutrition. And it's spelled out in exquisite detail. I've been reading sports nutrition books/articles for years and this book is the finest I've ever come across. For those who voice concern regarding his support of Twinlab products? His ethics regarding nutrition are above reproach as evidenced by the information in this book, and the honesty of his writing. I am a natural bodybuilder and can attest to their quality. And I am neither on Twinlabs nor Colgan's payroll. At this price this book is a steal. Buy it!!

Summary: For wrestlers, marathoners, couch potatoes and everyone else
Review: As a collegiate wrestler I have found this book to be extremely helpful both in and out of season. Dr. Colgan's vitamin and mineral supplementation plan is quite useful while cutting weight to maintain health as well as during off season while doing more distance and strength training. Additionally, his witty, if not sarchastic insight into the FDA and other "experts" on nutrition. All in all, Dr. Colgan's Optimum Sports Nutrition, while somewhat dated (Copyright 1993) is crucial for success for all world class athletes.

Rating: 5 stars
Summary: A must for anyone serious about COMPLETE nutrition
Review: Dr. Colgan brings so many things to light in a very readable manner. Not only can this book benefit athletes, but also anyone concerned about their health.

Rating: 3 stars
Summary: This book was top-notch when published in 1993.
Review: Dr. Colgan's book on nutrition deserved accolades when first published. Since it's publication there has been a wealth of published studies which deserve to be incorporated in an update of this fine book. I only hope Dr. Colgan's financial interests in TwinLab and his newsletter don't preclude the considered revision his readers deserve.

Summary: Clearly explains how nutrition can benefit athletes
Review: Easily understandable without being condesending or incomplete.More than just Vitamin A,B&C , this is a calorie and this is a carb etc. It goes how the body works and why it recommends X Y or Z. Armed with this knowledge you can make informed decisions about nutrtion. I would recommend every athlete read this book.

BUT and there is always a but, when I read this book in 95 it was out of date then on a number of subjects.Foor example creatine which is one of the most effective substances for athletes in training is discounted !.

Until this book it updated it cannot be the 'Bible of sports Nutrition'.

If it was updated it would be awsome.

Summary: Bites the Big One
Review: First of all, it is improper to put the letters Dr. before your name when you've already followed it with the letters Ph.D. It's either one or the other, not both. Obviously, Mike doesn't know this because he's so worried about everyone being assured of his education. Good luck in trying to find out what his PhD is in. It's conveniently omitted on all of his books. Now to the book...it's written as if the author has a high school education not a college education. It's full of poorly worded paragraphs, misspellings, and misinformation. Colgan is absolutely incorrect in some of his statements. I wouldn't recommend this book to anyone unless they're up for a good laugh of someone who has obvious Napoleon syndrome.

Summary: THE Sports Nutrition Bible
Review: For those of you who are looking to push your health and sports performance to the extreme, this book stands alone as the best in its field.

Dr. Michael Colgan is probably the most well-respected writer and researcher in sports nutrition today, and this book has become the "bible" of the sports nutrition industry. Some of today's most elite athletes, bodybuilders and celebrities have used this book's advice to help them achieve incredible gains in performance and physical appearance.

You don't have to be an elite athlete or celebrity to benefit from this book though. It contains a wealth of information on nutrition, diet and how they affect your health. It covers practically every vitamin, mineral, amino acid, fad health food and sports supplement you can think of, and explains the benefit (or lack thereof) of each.

While many clinical terms are used in the book, his advice is still understandable for the average person. A true classic of its time.
