Summary: Good workout plans
Review: Among the many books I have, this actually charts out a good progression of workout plans. If you are into improving your techniques, then this book is not for you. This book merely talks about how you could develop good work out plans.

Summary: Meet a great "virtual" coach and improve daily with him!
Review: At age 35 I am back to swiming after 20 years of absence... meanwhile training and technique issues seem to come from a different universe. Wishing to realize my childhood-dreams of participating in a "big meet" like European or World Masters Championships this book helped me tremendeously to learn how to swim more intelligently. Hines helps you to precisely judge your ability level first(test swims). Then you learn everything you need to know about swimming freestyle efficiently in theory and practically (drills are gradually built into swimming). Just to give you an example : in a few months I managed to lower my stroke counts from 16/25m to 9/25m swimming slow; I sprinted the 50m free in 31.5sec. taking 40 strokes and now I swim the same distance in 26.12sec. taking 34 strokes. As you conquer each of the six coloured zones Hines provides you with specific focus points, mental images and suggests games like SGolf (counting strokes, adding your time and eventually your heart rate to determine your score)to make each workout different and challenging. Entering yellow to red zones you learn how to build a solid aerobic base before you get to more stressful lactate endurance and lactate tolerance work always continuing to improve you technique at the same time. To me this seems to be the perfect mixture if you want to compete or just explore your personal limits. You will find detailed sample plans for the whole season explaining what you need to do when in order to perform at your best - I am looking forward to the Nationals!

Summary: Technique, target heart rates, graduated training program
Review: At last a swimming fitness book that emphasizes technique, target heart rates, and graduated training workouts. Compliments Total Immersion training book. This takes swimming training into the new millenium. A very different and healthier way to look at training and conditioning for novice to marathoner.

Summary: Great book!
Review: Being a long-time runner, I recently got interested in triathlon, but my swimming technique was way below average. After searching without success for a good book on swimming technique, I found this one and highly recommend it.

The author analyzes the dynamics of swimming technique in an easy to understand way and then decomposes the movements of swimming, so that even people with little experience can follow on a regular schedule. I think the book is a great example how a sports training book should be. Congratulations!

Summary: 60 Workouts to Build Skills and Conditioning!
Review: Fitness Swimming is a technique oriented book that details a series of drills to help the reader build a very efficient freestyle stroke from scratch. The core of the book is 60 graduated workouts that incorporate drilling and swimming in a cohesive and comprehensive manner to improve your conditioning for swimming highly effective freestyle. The whole emphasis is on teaching you how to AVOID resistance rather than just helping you get better at OVERCOMING resistance - i.e. work SMARTER, not HARDER. Lots of photos and illustrations as well as a variety of progress tracking charts.

Summary: Fantastic book for swimmers of all abilities-
Review: Fitness Swimming is a teriffic book for swimmers of all abilities- It's the kind of book that will get you in the pool while actually enjoying your swim practices. Emmett Hines is an excellent coach & author who understands how to get the reader motivated to swim smarter rather than harder- The self-paced drills and various workout organization are easy to follow and with consistency, make stroke & time improvements attainable for all levels of swimming abilities. The best part of this book is that improving your swimming doesn't have to be a terrible grind! As a former AAU swimmer, I know the "no pain, no gain" theory of my former coaches all too well- As a result,I was reluctant to pursue swimming again as regular excersize- Fortunately the Author's self stated mission in life is to "save the swimming part of the world", and he definitely succeeds. Thanks to Emmett Hines, I look forward to my 3-4x weekly swims and am always refreshed and energized after my workouts. If you are interested in swimming, get this book, set aside time for consistent practice and enjoy yourself while getting fit.

Summary: The best book to learn efficient freestyle swimming
Review: I am a 30 year old finance manager who used to swim for more than 20 years especially in freestyle.I learned swimming in a swimming school when I was a child and I also read some books to swim better, but all of these books did not add anything to my swimming efficiency. After reading 'Fitness Swimming' I realised that there is a concept called 'efficient swimming'. I started the excersises in Jan.1999 and I am still working on the skill drills to improve my technique.Within 5 months my strokes per length reduced by 25% without slowing down the pace. I strongly recommend this book to everyone who want to learn swimming or improve freestyle technique.I want to thank the coach to give me hundreds of valuable lessons free at charge.
