Rating: Summary: very disappointing Review: I bought this book hoping to find places to go on hikes with my daughter. The hikes are separated by distance from Sacramento and therefore is not easy to find a hike in a particular locale. For example, I live 45 minutes from Sacramento and the hikes in my backyard are in the same chapter as hikes that are 2 hours away.

Rating: Summary: A must have book for anyone in the Sacramento area. Review: The book outlines areas that are little known, as well as those more popular, for really seeing the land that Sacramento has to offer. It tells you how long to expect a hike to take, and what to watch for (both dangers and interrests). The layout is easy to follow and great as a research tool. You don't need children to enjoy the hikes and sites it has to offer.
Rating: Summary: DO NOT RELY ON THIS BOOK'S INFORMATION! Review: The last publishing date on this book is 1993. We are appalled that the author & publisher continue to collect money from consumers in 2002, without having updated the book to reflect new roads, park information, etc.Our first hike from this book was a disaster - the information just getting to the trailhead from the freeway was incorrect; we were forced to stop and ask for directions that clearly did not match the book. We trekked our 3 children a few miles into a campsite with loaded backpacks (our youngest is 4 years old), only to be forced back out because the book gave incorrect information as to a "walk-in" campground with "potable water," both of which simply did not exist. You cannot afford to be stuck in the wilderness with BAD advice; much less with children in tow! We are veteran hikers and have encountered misinformation in hiking books before, but this is by far the worst. It will be a long time before we buy another hiking guide; your best bet is to call state parks, campgrounds, trail authorities, etc and get updated information on reliable trails.
