Rating: 4 stars
Summary: A good primer on upland birds
Review: Field & Stream has provided a decent book on the basics of upland bird hunting. If you have not hunted for the different species involved, you will appreciate the straight-forward nature of this book. While it is not as detailed or as illustrated as other books of similer nature, it does cover all the basic situations you can run into in the field. Well worth the time to read.

Summary: Covers It All, But Not In Depth
Review: I can't help but feel a touch of sadness when I read this book--this was the last book Bill Tarrant wrote before he died. If you want a good look at the life of Bill Tarrant, read the introduction to "Best Way To Train Your Gun Dog." Tarrant was a fantastic writer and dedicated his life to ending brutality toward field dogs. I personally, looked at dogs in a new light after reading Best Way, so am thankful for Tarrant.

In this book, he covers the whole range of upland game birds using relevant info. This book isn't particularly in depth in tactics, though. As the other review stated, it's a great primer. Furthermore, it's Tarrant's last song, so is filled with his opinions/views on the sport... not that they're wrong, but they are his opinions.

More than a reference book, I gleaned a lot from this book learning about the author and his times. In addition to this book, you should also buy Tarrant's "Best Way..." and Datus Proper's "Pheasants of The Mind."
