Rating: Summary: Ugh--disappointing Review: If you have any knowledge of strength training whatsover, or if you already train (cardiovascular and/or resistance)on a semi-regular basis you don't need this book. The list of excercises is basic, the movement descriptions (kinesiology) aren't adequately detailed, and there were no compelling "surf specific" workouts. The main point of the book is certainly salient: raise your fitness level (strength, endurance) and you will perform better and feel more comfortable in the water. However, if you really want to raise the general level of your fitness, buy a book on strength training and a book on flexibility and create your own workout to focus on core muscle groups. (Working out in a pool a couple of times a week wouldn't hurt either)
Rating: Summary: Great Book! Review: My wife actually owns it and I flipped through her copy out of curiosity. After playing around with some of the stretches, I noticed less stiffness after sessions. This got me more curious & I tried more of the exercises and stretches. In a short time I definitely noticed improvements & felling better. I picked out a couple of the exercises & stretches & do them on a regular basis now.
Rating: Summary: Hanalei Surfer Surfs Less Works More Review: Now that winter's over the familiar flat summer approaches outside my window. Work is keeping me from island hopping this year and it doesn't look like I'll be out in the line up all that often. Just got a copy of Fit To Surf and it is something that is definitely helping me keep my stoke. Even if the summer offers nothing but waist high slop I'm faithfully using the workouts in this book to get ready for next winter. The cool thing about the exercises is that I don't have to join a gym with a bunch of Barneys on steroids. I don't even have to leave work, I can do it on my lunch break. Maybe if I'm lucky I will get fired and be able to go in search of surf but until that independence day I am going to do Rocky's exercise program.
Rating: Summary: Excellent source for surfers Review: Rocky has written a very accessible book that helps me, a formerly regular, and now infrequent surfer to stay fit for those few sessions a month. His routine really pays off for those of us who are weekend warriors, and don't keep our surf fitness up like we used to....by surfing everyday(and will help those looking to simply improve thier surfing). I found the explanations and photos to be great reminders for me to use proper form during the exercises and stretches. I have had the pleasure of watching Rocky in action, his routine works...try to out paddle the guy!
Rating: Summary: fit to surf on the central coast Review: rocky's book is very specific on the physical preparation to enjoy the sport of surfing. the exercises are very easy to perform and the instructions are clear and concise. you can tell that he is a experienced surfer by the way he applies the exercises to particular situations faced in the water. i enjoyed reading the forward by kevin miske as an inspiring preface to the rest of the book.
Rating: Summary: Short on substance Review: The author's background is a gym rat, and it shows. The most important things in surfing are endurance and flexibility. This book spends most of the time (50 pages)talking about strength training. Surf two or three times a week and you'll have all the arm strength you need. Out of over 140 pages, endurance training only covers 5 pages. The flexibility and nutrition chapters are also weak. I sent the book back. My advice for those wanting to get fit for surfing - find a good book on stretching (Bob Anderson) and stretch everyday. Surf as much as you can, or go for a swim, run or bike ride when the waves are flat.

Rating: Summary: Disappointing... Review: There is very little in this book that the average fitness-minded person does not already know. Granted, it does provide some ideas how to properly structure your training, and also a few exercises (esp. plyometrics) that are unique to this book, but on the overall does not have detailed enough information on surf-specific workouts. Also, the instructions for some of the more complex strength exercises such as the squat are dangerously inadequate. While such exercises may be highly productive if performed with correct form, the description in this book does not include even basic aspects of the right technique, and may so set you up for injury. Even though this was one of the first, there are better books on this topic!
Rating: Summary: FIT TO SURF ROCKS Review: This book is awesome! It gave me tons of cool tips on exercises, etc. to improve my stoke. I recommend it to anyone who owns a board. I love the fact I can work out at the beach and don't need a gym to do the exercises in this book. Fit to Surf should be in everyone's quiver.
