Because of the potential impact on sensitive marine environments as well as the dangerous conditions inherent to some areas, we weren't at all sure we wanted to publicize the whereabouts of our favorite paddling spots. Then an instructor friend of ours reminded us that other guidebooks had already been written and that some of the locations were being paddled regularly anyway. "If you guys write a book, at least you can tell people what to watch out for." So more than just another book giving directions to launch sites and scenic highlights, we strove to include information on how to avoid disturbing an area's marine life as well as any local hazards and the skill level needed to access each area safely. The book includes maps, photos, and route descriptions for 40 of our favorite local trips. Most routes have alternatives for beginner, intermediate and advanced kayakers from the same launch site so that well over 100 trip options exist. Our experience running classes in the area over the past eight years for every level from first-time beginners through fellow instructors has given us good insight on what novices can handle and what more experienced paddlers are looking for. So this is a book that someone just starting out can buy and continue to enjoy throughout their paddling career. Of course, the better your skills, the safer you'll be and the more of this amazing coastline you'll be able to explore. This is why we highly recommend paddling within your limits and seeking competent instruction-whether from us or from other professional (preferably A.C.A. certified) instructors. Whatever your skill level, we hope you will enjoy the book and that you will paddle safely and responsibly, respecting both the awesome power and the incredible fragility of our local waters.
