Summary: An indispensable, practical guidebook reference.
Review: Andromeda Romano-Lax's How To Rent A Public Cabin In Southcentral Alaska is recommended for the rugged wilderness traveler: it tells hikers, kayakers, anglers and more how to locate and rent such cabins for very little money. While often bare-bones and lacking amenities, these cabins provide shelter and portals to the wilderness.

Rating: 5 stars
Summary: Perfect guide to the "Alaskan's secret"
Review: Few people who live outside of Alaska know about Alaska's wonderful public use cabins available for rent. This book explains how to enjoy some of the best Alaska has to offer (very inexpensively, by the way). A great resource for vacationing in Alaska.

Summary: describes her new book and how it well help travelers.
Review: There was a time I slept in a tent, or under the stars. Then I moved to Alaska. My apologies to outdoor purists, but at this northern latitude, I have come to appreciate shelter. The reason: Alaska is plenty wild (and often enough, cold and wet), even with a roof overhead. Alaska's public cabins are located in phenomenally beautiful areas -- on pristine lakes, rivers, or seashore, usually away from all other forms of development. By staying in a rustic public cabin (there are at least seven kinds, managed by the Forest Service, State Parks, National Park Service, and more) you can have access to your own corner of wilderness while staying safe and comfortable. But which cabin do you choose? (There are over 105 just in southcentral Alaska alone.) And how to get there? And what to bring? Whether you want to mountain bike, fish, sea kayak, or just hide away, there's a lot to know before you go. My book provides descriptions of the cabins, reservation info, plus 10 essays describing cabin adventures (from easy family trips to glacier/ rainforest/ coastal fjord mini-expeditions) and over 100 photos. This book has been called a "cabins bible," equally well-suited to the novice and expert adventurer.

Summary: Alaska's secret treasure revealed!
Review: This is such a helpful book, I'm almost sorry it was written! This is *the* definitive guide to renting public cabins in southcentral Alaska. As an Alaskan who appreciates the availability of inexpensive cabins -- especially when B&Bs and hotels are $... nightly -- I must say I hope too many travelers don't catch on. Excellent and informative.
