Rating: Summary: A Visitor's Treasure Review: I don't live in New Jersey, but I have visited several times. After reading Ms. Zatz's book, I'm ready to pack my hiking boots, borrow my nieces and nephew, and introduce them to what sounds like some terrific places. I highly recommend this well written, well researched guide. Ms. Zatz knows her stuff.
Rating: Summary: Great Reference! Review: I love this book. I just got it a few weeks ago and we have hiked each week since I got it. I find it easy to use. I love that it ranks the difficulty of the hike. I have a 5 yr old and a 7 year old. This book makes it easy for planning an afternoon trip vs an all day adventure. It also tells you things like if the trail is "bugy" in the summer or if you need to wear long pants because it is a "thorny" hike. Lots of great & useful tools.
Rating: Summary: Invaluable resource for those of us with young children. Review: I'm not from NJ, but neede a quick guide to hikes there, and I have four kids. The format is so easy to use...difficlty, elevation, maps, etc. are all there.
Rating: Summary: These 75 hikes will delight children - and big people, too. Review: If you enjoy exploring the outdoors, the 75 hikes in this book will delight you whether you're single, married, or a family. From the northern highlands to the beaches and pine barrens in the south, this book will guidey ttebs of the Garden State. Hike the Kittatinny Mns.for unbeatable vistas; scamper over huge boulders while overlooking the Hudson River; discover birds, reptiles, and mammals; and much more. The majority of hikes can be done in a day; some can be turned into overnight camping trips. Detailed descriptions of trails include a quick-reference heading with information on distance (from 1 to 8 miles round-trip), difficulty (from easy to more challenging), elevation gain, and best time to go, making it easy to match hikes to skill and energy levels. My book includes useful tips on hiking with kids, safety, and encouraging envirronmental awareness. I guarantee you'll love my book and will look forward to the next hike
Rating: Summary: A useful book covering the entire state Review: Many long-time New Jersey residents have never truly explored all the state has to offer. This easy-to-read book guides us to a variety of family-friendly places with clear maps and directions. It's a great way to get outdoors and see the state.
Rating: Summary: a waste of time and money Review: The local tourist authority has better hiking tips than the old fare the Zatzes warm over. The chipper tone hurts one's teeth and makes Kathie Lee Gifford seem pensive and profound.
Rating: Summary: 75 great ideas for stimulating mind and body Review: This book is very well laid out from the initial NJ map showing the location of all the sites to the pertinent information given at the beginning of each hike, the excellent site maps and the handy signs in the margins. The writing is clear, interesting, filled with geological and historical background information, points of interest, helpful suggestions and cautionary notes. I have ventured out on several of the hikes and they've been great. Would recommend to anyone interested in hiking in The Garden State, with or without children.
