Summary: This book made me a better skier.
Review: A must have for any skier wishing to advance in ability

Summary: Simple Rules that Really Work!
Review: After many books and tapes, I found an approach that really works. Originally, I used the video tape and am buying the book as an easy reminder of the basic list of techniques. Lito's first lesson is easy: ski on one foot. He goes on to add a few more subtle techniques, but the full message can probably be summarized in less than ten points. The techniques are simply presented, easy to put into practice but profoundly effective. I've been using the tape for three years and have made noticeable strides after hiding out in the intermediate rut for 20 years! Highly recommended.

Summary: Pretty much un-readable
Review: Although there are a few good nuggets in this book I found it practically unreadable.

First, the lack of visuals. There are a few figures in the book but they are hand drawn and not very informative. That means you've got to understand everything from the text. Why not use photographs liberally to SHOW what you mean rather than just describe it.

Contrast this book with Harold Harb's new book "Anyone can be an expert skier", or Warren Witherall's "The Athletic Skier" and you'll know what I mean.

Second, and this might be trivial to a lot of people, but I thought the font was horrible. Why use a helvitica font when you could use a times roman font? It is MUCH harder to read. The pages have no white-space.

So, bottom line, I would NOT recommend this to someone looking for that proverbial breakthrough. It is a nice supplemant to other books such as Harb's and Witherall's books on skiing.

Summary: Great Book
Review: As a 1 week/yr. skier, I still wanted to ski better. This book uncovered he secret that eluded me - one foot skiing. I'm still progressing but this is the book you should be reading on the plane flight to the mountains.

Summary: Also Get Lito's Videos
Review: Go to DVD & VIDEO on the Amazon top menu and type in LITO. He has made three videotapes which are as superb as the book. I talked a good deal there in a customer review (for Tape #3) to the effect that the first two tapes are indispensable.

We all learn differently but for me, book and tapes are necessary companions. Bear in mind that the tapes are 29 bucks, full length, and you wind up watching them over and over. An hour of ski instruction on the slope is about 75 dollars--and let's be honest, when was the last time you had instruction of any kind(G)?

Summary: If you like to read more than ski go for it!
Review: I began to read this with enthusiasum until I reached past the last one third of this book. Technically it's very good. but I felt the author's indepth wording (not to the point) approach lost some of the zeal.but over all you do get some good information.

Summary: this is a ten star book and worth much, much more
Review: I bought this book 5 years ago, and and to me it's worth at least $5000. It also deserves as many stars. IF you do what this book says, you WILL get get what Lito promise's. I went from an intermediate to a level 9 skier and am now going to be a ski instuctor myself at the age of 55. Lito has made me eat, sleep,& dream of skiing all year round. I've been wanting to thank Lito for teaching me to ski [like an expert]for a long time now, and this is my opportunity, all I can say is..just buy this book at any price. It's the ski bible, layman, terms.

Summary: The best book on skiing instruction written.
Review: I finally got sick of taking this book out of the library every ski season and decided to buy it rather than steal the library's copy. But I did consider that. After having been an intermediate skier for 20 years (taking a 10 year hiatus), reading Lito's book and applying the principles had me comfortably skiing black diamonds within an afternoon. It is the most remarkable book for intermediates but it is not for beginners. Beginning skiers will not understand the application of the terminolgy. They are best served by lessons. But for intermediates who desire "the secret" Lito discloses it clearly, concisely and correctly. In a step by step process, Lito brings you the "Zen" of skiing, the philosophy that translates into perfect parallel's. Lito is to skiing as Colin Fletcher is to walking.

Summary: Very good, 1 major flaw
Review: I found this book very helpful, and I especially liked his overall attitude. The author's philosophy is that most skiing problems are basically technical and, assuming you're not a total wimp or a basket case, most psycholgical hangups come from not possessing the proper technical skills to deal with various situations. In other words, he concentrates on technique and skips the psycho-babble. I loved his mogul strategy and had good results with it my first ski trip after reading it. My major disagreement with this book is that it advocates putting 100% weight on the downhill ski to turn, and a lot of his instructions are based on this technique. I find this is unnecessary to carve a good turn, especially on sidecut skis. It also leads to the weightless ski trying to wander, makes it harder to edge deeply when you are extended at speed, and makes you more likely to fall on ice if you lose an edge.

Summary: The best techniques book on skiing ever written.
Review: I read the first edition of this book cover-to-cover and have kept referring back to it over the years. The author has clearly thought through all his moves on all levels from beginner to advanced. What I like the most are the final chapters when the author goes back to his mountaineering roots and writes about the kind of skiing that continues to inspire us all: skiing in the back-of-the beyond. On a typical day I'd run through a number of drills I remember from the book, in preparation for the real adventure of backcountry skiing. I can trace the continuity of this line of thought through his other books: "Backcountry skiing" and "Wildnerness Skiing" (with Allen Steck). I like the author's analysis of bump skiing, which he feels to be important to the development of a skier. He has continued to refine the material in the book through his many magazine articles. The best complement to the chapter on moguls is the videotape created by Olympic Silver Medalist Nelson Carmichael "Mogul Mastery" (1994 Freestyle Productions, White Salmon, WA).
