Summary: Concise guide to selecting optics.
Review: A good rifle scope can easily cost $400 these days; a goodbinocular can cost $1,000; and range finders and spotting scopes cancost thousands! You need to know what to look for before you plop that kind of money down. Finally there is a book that sorts out the quality from the junk and true bargains from the overpriced. John Barsness talks honestly about brands and models that work--and those that don't. He names names and lets the chips fall where they may. Do you know why magnification rings on good scopes are hard to turn? Do you know that your scope's recticles can melt and how that can happen? Do you know why European optics cost so much? (The answer will surprise you.) He will also tell you how to evaluate optics yourself, both in the store and at home. Are scopes with 30mm tubes really better? What is the best value in laser range finders? Do you really have to spend $1,000 for a good binocular? What spotting scopes have the best optics? All these frequently asked questions and dozens of others are answered in this book. Spending a few dollars on this book will save you hundreds or even thousands in the long run.

Summary: Useful Book
Review: I found Optics for the Hunter to be educational. I learned several bits of information that helped me feel like I was making an educated decision in purchasing both a binocular and rifle scope. It does not really help you choose between the various products within a mfg line (like between the various Leupold models) you'll have to figure that out for your self.

It does provide valuable info on mounting scopes as well. I am glad I bought it.

Summary: Tells you all you need to know about scopes & binoculars
Review: This is one of the best books on optics I have ever encountered. It is filled with knowledge for the layman, but it is detailed enough to satisfy the expert. Barsness walks the reader through the pros and cons of various styles and brands of binoculars, rifle scopes, spotting scopes, and rangefinders. He does not hesitate to make explicit comparisons between various makes and models, and he helps the reader make informed decisions about quality vs. price. Do yourself a favor and study this book before buying another piece of optics-related equipment.
