Rating: Summary: This book is a must for every year of deer hunter. Review: I got this book because I am taking up bowhunting for the first year, I now know some of the deer's behavior and sense abilities, I think after reading this book I will bag my first buck by bow.
Rating: Summary: The most disappointing book I've ever bought. Review: If you're a deer hunter who actually enjoys watching late night infomercials, have I got a book for you! John Weiss' "The Advanced Deer Hunter's Bible" is 190 pages of commercial endorsements thinly disguised as a book about deer hunting. Weiss doesn't even camoflage the advertisements with the old "I used Dr. Zook's Buck Dee-See-Ver and shot the biggest buck of my life!" Instead he "proves" the value of the products by quoting "experts" who just happen to work for the company that makes the stuff. There may be valuable information in there somewhere, but I was too disgusted to find it after wading through ten separate Name-Brand endorsements in the first eleven pages of text. My advice is to save your $10.36 plus shipping and handling or spend it on three issues of "Outdoor Life". That way, the advertisements are labeled and if you don't learn anything useful you can still read Pat McManus. I give this book one star only because zero isn't an option.
Rating: Summary: Pathetic! Review: Ignore the hype. This is poorly written and just plain dull..
Rating: Summary: Informative and helpful tool for hunting the Whitetale Deer Review: The first, second, and third chapters are very important to any serious deer hunter. Weiss has shown great insight on what keeps this animal alive. Keen eye's can spot any movement, a nose that can pick up sent 10,000 times greater than man's, and ears that can detect and pin point sound from any direction. Weiss has also given helpful information concerning maps, and were to purchase them so you can focus on food sources, traveling patterns, and bedding areas for whitetale deer. However I must add this personal note: I have found a more informative book for hunting, using scents, and scouting deer habitat. (Southern Deer & Deer Hunting, by Dr. Larry Weishuhn & Bill Bynum.)
Rating: Summary: Good Basic Primer -- but a little dated Review: This book had both good and not so good chapters. The information shared from scientific studies of whitetail deer habits was very useful to me. The chapters on the whitetails eyes, nose, and ears were quite entertaining, particularly information on the use of scents which addresses attractants and the ability of some attractants to actually repel deer if not used properly or if used in the wrong environment. Bowhunter's will quickly see why the book is outdated because the compound bow speed cited by the author is around 230 feet per second -- they are now over 300 fps which makes some of the discussion about a deer "jumping the string" irrelevant. But the information could still be useful by simply updating the speed figures. I have been hunting whitetail deer for over 20 years and this book was a great refresher. However, some of the previous comments about some dull chapters or some sense of commercialism have merit. At any rate, I don't feel like I wasted my money and will use some of the information on this year's hunt.
