Summary: Great book, tons of detail
Review: I'm just getting started boating in the Pacific Northwest and I felt a lot more comfortable with anchoring after reading this book. Tremendous detail about the subject.

Summary: Just Pointing out an Error
Review: If you'll note, the author's review gives the book zero stars instead of five. The average rating was showing up as three stars as a result. Something tells me the author didn't mean to give his own book zero stars.

Summary: Excellent anchoring book, readable, practical
Review: Mr. Hinz's The Complete Book of Anchoring and Mooring contains a great deal of detailed information that I didn't even know I needed to know. How much more there is to anchoring than dropping the hook and letting out some line! As well as the basic techniques, he covers heavy-weather anchoring, with some fascinating case histories, and also goes into great detail about the different types of anchor, and about bitts, winches, rope and chain rodes, and rode lockers. Mr. Hinz writes well - the book is easy to read, and he manages to convey the technicalities in accessible, layman's terms. This is a very practical, interesting, useful book for anyone who is serious about anchoring well and safely. Charles T. Low

Summary: The definitive guide to the art of anchoring and mooring
Review: THE COMPLETE BOOK.... addresses anchoring systems, techniques, and permanent moorings for boats from 12 to 80 feet in length. It covers monohulls, multihulls, light displacement cruisers, sportfishers, ocean-going motorboats, and workboats. In short, it is for all boats in this size range.

The book deals not only with anchor behavior, but also with the rode assembly, riding stoppers, windlasses and other deck gear, and the human factors of use. What formerly was thought of as strength through size (heavy anchors and large rodes) has been refined to decrease weight, lighten loads on the boat, and reduce difficulty in handling. Wind strengths up to hurricane level are considered for both anchoring and mooring.

This has continued to be the definitive text for small boat ground tackle since its first edition in 1986. This second edition has been fully updated.
