Rating: Summary: Really makes you wonder... Review: This is a haunting, mysterious book focusing on Mallory and Irvine, the first men to attempt conquering Everest. Leading you through their story, the novel points out evidence suggesting they made it to the summit, and also evidence suggesting they did not. This will make a good holiday gift for those with good minds for deep thinking. The answer will be in your head upon seeing both sides after completing "Ghosts of Everest": did they make it? The mystery will haunt us until we know...
Rating: Summary: History and Adventure on Mount Everest Review: This is a wonderful book that combines the history of the early British attempts in 1922 and 1924 to summit Mount Everest and the business and adventure of undertaking an expedition today. Interesting reading that reawakened the interest I had when the National Geographic mounted the first successful American expedition. In short, a book that will have me reading more about Everest and the remarkable George Mallory. I await the next phase of the expedition: the search for Irvine.
Rating: Summary: Made me take up hiking. Review: cROSS my "heart" and "hope" ta die "I never wanted to climb a mountain " before i read this crap
Rating: Summary: Ghosts of Everest Review: Many thanks for a new look at Everest history. I hope that all of you some day find the camera, I think Mallory and Irvine made it. Thanks John A.
Rating: Summary: A gem of a story, well-written! Review: This is a wonderful look back in time to the amazing geographic curiosity of the British in the 1920s. Coupled with it is the incredible and true story of another group of curious American explorers who set out in 1999 to accomplish the impossible by attempting to find traces of the 1920s expedition. That all these characters are mountain climbers is only part of the story. That the 1999 team DID find the body of a member of the 1924 expedition is also only part of the story. The real story is the human drama of both eras. The 1999 team does a great job in this book of paying their tribute to heroes of a by-gone era of exploration, while demonstrating that the will to seek and find new truth and explore new horizons is still alive and well in some of us. The rest of us can live it vicariously through great books like this one!
Rating: Summary: A classic! Review: The 1999 Mallory & Irvine Research Expedition is already becoming known as one of the great mountaineering events of this century. This official team account is a library must for Everest fans and climbers. The photography is respectful and beautiful. Plus, it's a good mystery and a grand adventure story. I strongly recommend it.
Rating: Summary: It is a superbly written and illustrated book. Review: I thought it had all been said about this expedition and Everest in general until I read this book. The accounts published by the authors in magazines such as National Geographic, and Outside are good but pale in comparison to the quality of the presentation of this book. The photos of the primitive equipment Mallory, Irvine and their colleagues used almost 100 years ago tell a compelling story. I cannot imagine achieving the heights they achieved with the hobnail boots. I had never seen a pair up close. The photos of the mountain from each expedition are remarkable and unique. This book is more than just a climbing tale. The author does a superb job of portraying the people on the 1924 and 1999 expeditions, and the cultures in which they immersed themselves. Mountaineers Books also did an outstanding job of producing the best quality Everest book I have seen to date. It is beautifully designed and executed. It is one of those rare books that I hated to finish and will no doubt refer to and savor again. You will want a quality hardback copy for your library or coffee table.
Rating: Summary: a gripping story Review: This is a taut and fascinating look into the Mallory expedition. The message teaches one to consider going beyond the realm(s) that you might ordinarily.By including the 1924 original trip and the 1999 expedition, the reader gets a sense of comparioson and the differences in technology and equipment that 75 years have brought.I think that this book will fascinate many types of readers, including those who have never climbed. Like The Perfect Storm, the appeal transcends the active participant audience.
Rating: Summary: An attempt to solve mountaineering's greatest mystery. Review: When Mallory and Irvine disappeared on the upper slopes of Everest in 1924, did they achieve the summit? The expedition described in this book tried to solve this mystery and did succeed in collecting a great amount of data, especially with the discovery of the body of George Mallory and his effects. The only complaint I might have is that precious resources that then might have been utilized in the search for the body of Irvine(and the all important expedition camera)were then squandered on a summit climb. Still this expedition collected a considerable amount of data related to the 1924 summit attempt. Hopefully, another expedition will be fitted out eventually to search for Irvine(whose body may have been sighted by the Chinese Everest expedition of 1975) and, possibly, clear up this mystery once and for all.
Rating: Summary: A spellbinding story of the Mallory-Irvine mystery Review: A wonderfully written and well photograghed and illustrated account of the search for the lost explorers of Everest, culminating in the discovery of George Mallory's body. The thorough research done by Everest historian Jochen Hemmleb was fascinating and instrumental in narrowing down the search area and laying to rest many previous theories about Mallory and Irvine's disappearance. Given the toughness of these early climbers and the shear drive and determination of George Mallory, one can't help but fantasize they made it to the summit. This book is a "must read" for any Everest enthusiast and great reading for anyone who loves a true-life mystery.
