Summary: The unsolved mystery
Review: An inspiring story which combines the 1924 expedition with the 1999 'shawdow'adventurers. A gripping unsolved mystery, leaving the reader with plenty of information to form their own conclusion, whatever that maybe! At all times never did they take away from Sir Edmund Hilary or Tenzing Norgay their great achievement but one will always be left to wonder who did make it to the top first?

Summary: I stayed up late for this one
Review: I'm not known for going to bed early, but I stayed up especially late with this book. It's a page-turner and deeply thoughtful. Mt. Everest is like another planet altogether, and although I'd never get near it, I'm fascinated with the accounts of those who do. Meticulous (plenty of footnotes), beautifully photographed, and intelligent in its pairing of the two expeditions. The photos of Mallory's body were essential and terrible. I plan to read this one again.

Summary: What a find!
Review: This is an excellent book for the mountaineer in your life. The recap of events is well done. Photos are excellent and the author's conclusions are thought provoking. Enjoy!

Summary: Mystery & History all rolled into one
Review: Gripping! Ghosts of Everest reads like a good detective novel. The authors nicely blend the story of the 1924 disappearance with their 1999 search and discoveries. Numerous excellent illustrations bring Everest and the climbs alive. An excellent addition to any climbing library.

Summary: Case not quite solved
Review: This is an extremely good, compulsive read. Many have found the photos in bad taste, but they are another point of interest in a fascinating book which tries hard (and succeeds) to remain faithful to its subject. Where the book falters slightly is in its concentration on the behaviour of the BBC. Whilst it was obvious the team were, perhaps justifiably, peeved with some of the BBC's antics, this proved a distraction from both the main purpose of the expedition and the book. A final conclusion is not drawn as to whether Mallory and Irvine 'made it' or no, but a succession of scenarios is presented and discussed. This, together with a poignant synthesis of what probably happened when they perished is the finest part of the book. In the final analysis, a conclusion cannot be drawn, but one puts the book down feeling that the odds that they reached the summit just improved from three to one against to even steven.

Summary: Hard to Read
Review: Very good book, pictures excellent, but I, too, had a gutter problem. Type too close to the spine especially since there is over a three inch unused margin on alot of the pages. It is also an awkard size and pages are high glossy and when the light hits it is hard to read. Can't prop it up and eat a sandwich!

Summary: Adding a Chapter to History
Review: This is a great, upbeat narrative about how one person's dream, and a group of sincere, committed (not to mention extremely likeable) mountaineers came together to add a chapter to one of history's most enduring adventure mysteries. The book is well written--paralleling the 1924 and 1999 expeditions interestingly and entertainingly--and incorporates tons of beautiful photographs from both. The team's conclusions are inconclusive, but they came a lot closer to drawing a picture of what may have happened to Mallory and Irvine. I recommend this book highly for people who love a good mystery, adventure, or who are fascinated by Everest.

BTW - My book didn't have the above-mentioned gutter problem. Maybe that one was mis-bound?

Summary: "THE MYSTERY OF MALLORY & IRVINE"-THE FACTS FULLY EXAMINED !
Review: I have been interested in Mt. Everest since the British first climbed it successfully in 1953. I always felt that Mallory and Irvine had made it to the summit in 1924 and died while descending. "The Ghosts of Everest", is the first book to fully assemble all of the facts that have been gathered up to now. It is expertly written and considers all of the possibilities, and gives the reader everything one needs to come to a logical conclusion. The photography is striking in its beauty, and the important landmarks and elevations are there also. This book answers nearly all of the many questions that one would like to ask.-5 Stars !

Summary: Make your wrists sore kind of book
Review: Absolutely riveting! I picked the book up and seven hours later it was over. The background and history is explained clearly and the story gips you from there on. Empathy or rather jealousy is in full order for the men who found Mallory. What a rush it must have been! The pictures are some of the most fascinating I've seen. Even if you know jack about Everest...this is the book to start with.

Summary: The text runs too far into the gutter.
Review: Great material but... the text runs too far into the gutter (the fold where two inside pages come together) making the book very, very hard to read. I've never seen a book with this problem. It really hurts the work. Move the text away from the gutter!
