Rating: Summary: Why buckskin? What exactly is buckskin? Review: Hi! I tan and teach tanning for a living. A few years ago, we had some major breakthroughs that made tanning much easier, and that's why this book was written. You see, tanning hides with natural materials was the way it was done for millenia. Something our ancestors did all over the world. However, most of the details of how it was done was lost during the industrial revolution. Over the years many different folks have been 'rediscovering' these details, making it easier to do again. Natural tanning is also variously known as brain tanning, smoke tanning, Indian tanning, or soap tanning. You can use eggs, brains (the animals own) or soap and oil to make buckskin. They all work and they all create the same type of leather. This leather is extremely soft, durable and beautiful. It breathes in hot weather and insulates when it is cold (it is not waterproof). It is an excellent material to make clothes and bags from as people have been doing for tens of thousands of years. You don't need to hunt. Most deerskins are discarded every fall, because people don't know a good safe home tanning method. You can get hides from friends who hunt, from game processors (see 'meat' in the yellow pages) and of course from roadkills. You will be making extremely strong, natural leather from a resource that might otherwise go to waste -- clothing that will last a life-time! END
Rating: Summary: Best that I have seen on the subject. Review: I review many books for one medium or another, centering on rendezvous crafts. This is the best book on the subject, along with clear instructions and well done photographs to highlight one process or another. The only thing that I can write about this title is GET THIS BOOK! Layout is outstanding. I have seen too many books with good information and **horrible** layout. This book represents a perfect combination of outstanding layout and excellent textual presentation. You **will not** get any better.
Rating: Summary: The Best Book On The Subject Review: I tried for fifteen years to successfully brain tan a deer hide. I read every book I could on the subject. I usually made rawhide chew bones for the dogs. Since buying "Deerskins into Buckskins" I have successfully tanned about 65 hides, and the dogs haven't had a chew bone. If you want to be successful at brain tanning, buy Mr. Richards' book and use his simple method. You won't be disappointed.

Rating: Summary: Way COOL book! Review: I went hunting for the first time this past Fall and harvested my first Buck. After freezing the meat, I felt that I ought not waste the hide, so I looked up tanning. Just from reading the reviews, this book seemed like the best there was...and it is! My first hide turned out spectacularly, simply by following the instructions in the book. Even if you arent into tanning hides, this book is just fun to read. It has humor and history and everything a great book should have! This book is a "Must Have" for every hunter, outdoorsman, etc.
Rating: Summary: THIS BOOK IS THE MOST INFORMATIVE BUCKSKIN BOOK EVER Review: THE ONLY WAY TO GET A MORE INFORMATIVE BRAIN TANNING METHOD IS TO LEARN FROM A NATIVE AMERICAN WHO PRACTICES THIS. BUT SINCE THIS BOOK IS A COMPILATION OF KNOWLEDGE PAINSTAKINGLY REASEARCHED BY THE AUTHOR FROM NATIVE AMERICANS, I THINK THIS BOOK WILL DO. AWSOME AND PERFECT FOR SOMEONE WANTING TO LEARN HOW TO MAKE A WONDERFUL AND FREE "FABRIC" FROM NATURE. BUY IT UP AND LEARN.
Rating: Summary: The Best I've Seen! Review: There are several books on learning to make braintan buckskin, several of which are really good and contain lots of correct information, but Matt's book is the best I've seen...and used. I do braintanning, and have done so for years, so I know what I am talking about when I say that Deerskins into Buckskins is the easiest book to use to get good, solid, consistent results. I also believe that the format is the best for beginners because Matt clearly defines each step crucial to success. Braintanning can be a frustrating endeavor for a beginner if steps are missing or incomplete; Deerskins into Buckskins makes it hard to miss a step or misunderstand what is required. I would not recommend learning to tan without this book...unless you have an expert living with you!
Rating: Summary: He nailed it.... Review: This book has many virtues, but the one I was most grateful for is that Matt make it impossible NOT to understand how to wet-scrape braintan. He anticipates the reader's every possible wrong turn. So many skilled craftsmen are tongue-tied. Even if they know what they are doing, they cannot put themselves into the mind of a newcomer to their craft. Matt not only has a rare knack for doing just that, he also knows how to keep the nervous newbie calm. Anyone who follows Matt's directions will have a beautiful piece of buckskin, soft as velvet but tough enough to turn the meanest thorns...
