Summary: Absorbing, humorous, and an occasionally inspiring
Review: A Walk For Sunshine is the fascinating story of Jeff Alt's 2,160 mile hiking expedition for charity on the fabled Appalachian Trail. Along the way he was occasionally alone, and often accompanied for a time by his brother, family, friends, and more than 800 strangers. Alt dedicated his Appalachian Trail sojourn to his brother who suffered from Cerebral Palsy and the other 850 disabled citizens supported by a residential treatment home in Northwest Ohio. Completing his journey in 147 days, he was able to raise almost $40,000 for the Sunshine home as a result of his efforts. A Walk For Sunshine is a travel and hiking memoir that is absorbing, humorous, and an occasionally inspiring true life adventure travelogue.

Summary: Uplifting & Humorous
Review: Alt's book is both inspirational and funny -- even couch potatoes will want to hike the AT after reading it! I applaud his dedication to his family and the spirit of the trail. This book is a must-read for anyone interested in helping others.

Summary: A great story
Review: As an occasional weekend hiker, I found this book to be a great inspiration to do more. It's a great story about one man's experiences on the trail and how he managed to stay motivated along the way. The easygoing style will make you think Jeff is the boy next door. A great read!

Rating: 5 stars
Summary: Walk for Sunshine is Bright
Review: Great book, I felt like I was hiking with Jeff. It was funny at times. I recommend it to any AT hiker!

Summary: Excellent Story From a Guy With Heart
Review: Great read, great hike, great leadership, great charity. This book is more about the emotions of hiking the trail than it is information on hiking. Albeit, its a great book for anyone interested in ambitious biographies.

Summary: I do not recall ever having read a book this bad
Review: I have thru-hiked the AT, PCT, and CDT. I have read 15 books on the AT, 4 on the PCT, and 2 on the CDT (not including the trail guides, databooks, nor companions); and this is by far, unquestionably, without any doubt the worst of those. Yes it is admirable that he hiked over 2000 miles. Yes it is also admirable that he did this for his brother and for charity. But this does not entitle him to put out a book when he does know how to write. Look, I am not asking for a Mark Twain or a Bill Bryson or even a semi-professional raconteur, but at least pretend that he is capable of squeezing out some sentences more complicated than noun-verb or noun-verb-noun, and some vocabulary beyond the 8th grade level. Hint, ghost writers, or at least some basic editing for God's sake.

Summary: I need another star!
Review: I know of a few readers (at least one on here - Not you, Magaroni..lol) who were disappointed with this book (wait...this review gets better!). Touting the book as a laugh-a-minute riot or a literary masterpiece would do the book (and Jeff Alt) a great disservice.

A Walk For Sunshine is a light, inspiring, easy read, and chronicles the 2,000 + mile journey of a "regular Joe." The book was written from accounts taken from Mr. Alt's own AT journals, and he does, in fact, mention within the book that he did not set out to be an author. Mr. Alt's subtle humor within the book just happens to be a wonderful bonus. While giving detailed descriptions of trail life, observations of other hikers, or a reminder that kindness still exists in this world (trail angels), Mr. Alt consistently turns negatives into positives.

I had the wonderful opportunity of meeting Mr. Alt at a presentation in Shenandoah National Park. His enthusiasm and energy are contagious and his personality definitely comes through on the pages of his book.

Corny or not, right now I'm going to do what I did at the end of Mr. Alt's presentation and at the conclusion of his book.
