Rating: 5 stars
Summary: One of the best Hunting books ever written.
Review: This book should be required reading for every Hunter. The relationship between the Old Man and the Author is spectacular; there are no words to express my love of this book.

Rating: 5 stars
Summary: Everyone should have to read this book.
Review: This is a book about a young boy and his relationship with his grandfather. A simple story, but it's mixture of good old fashion common sense, decency, repsect, love and childhood magic teach lessons that many people today would put to rest. This book will leave you yearning for America of old, wise elders, a fishing reel, a duck blind and a simpler yet more fulfilling life. This book is a treasure that should be used to teach children of today that family, nature, honor, and the simpler things in life are more important than anything today's society tells them. And if you ever looked upon your grandfather as a god, like I did, you may shed a tear or two from missing them so much. And yes, I'm a city boy.

Summary: The Old Man And The Boy
Review: This was the type of book that once I started reading, I could not put it down. I was born and raised within a couple of hours of where the setting for this book originated and I could really relate to it. It is a glorious story of a boy coming of age with a wonderful mentor - his Grandfather. I could see a great parrallel with the teachings of the Grandfather, because I am now at an age to where I am more interested in leaving the same kind of legacy for my children. I can`t hardly wait to start on my next book from Mr. Ruark, "The Old Mans Boy Grows Older". I highly recommend this book to others.

Summary: Excellent, true Americana
Review: When I read this many years ago, I thought someone had chronicled my life in rural Louisiana. The sight and sounds of hunting and fishing were brought alive by Robert Ruark. The whole perspective of that way of life is warmly protrayed as it should be. A must read for all Americans.

Summary: Better upon reflection
Review: While this book did turn out to be slightly borning, I found a number of things that redeemed it. One of the most pleasant surprises can be found in the teaching that the old man does. He uses every situation as a lesson, passing on anecdotes, proverbs, stories and rules for living. Throughout the book, the boy picks up the knowledge of how to be a gentleman, be responsible and live life to the fullest: all compliments of the old man. Some of this wisdom is not easy to find, but looking back after reading the book I saw that I was richer for having done so.

Summary: Sportsman Utopia
Review: Young Robert Ruark apparently lived during the last gasps of an American continent striving to preserve its wildness, and he exploited the situation to the fullest. Springing from an environment of urban amenities, he nonetheless had access to everything wonderful that rural America could offer: abundant game, fish and fowl; wild, unpopulated woods, fields and streams; empty beaches and the great Atlantic Ocean. His forenote, "Anybody who read this will realize I had a fine time as a kid," hits the nail on the head.

I first read this book as a pre-teen, and have been envious of Ruark ever since. His fishing, hunting, camping, boating, hiking tales are the stuff of a fantastic boyhood -- and for the overwhelming majority of Americans in today's times, such adventures are found only in stories told by folks from the distant past.
