Summary: Very thorough but dated in critical areas
Review: My expectations were high due to the very good reviews I had read. The book has sections on ballistics, anatomy and statics of human body, rifle and pistol shooting positions, aiming, breathing, releasing the trigger, specific types of competitive shooting events.

I found the background sections (anatomy etc.) quite interesting in the area where I did not know much (statics of human body) but weak when I had a reasonable understanding of the topic (ballistics). I was very much looking forward to the detailed analysis of the actual shooting action (i.e. position, sequencing and problem analysis). I was not disappointed for the aiming, breathing and trigger sections. The positions, however, were quite dated, and in particular the pistol positions were all single handed! Of course, the whole section on specific events is missing some modern events as well.

On the whole the book is highly analytical but the fact that it is quite dated greatly decreases its usefulness. I would not recommend it for a pistol shooter looking to improve his/ her technique due to the lack of even a discussion of double-handed holds.

Summary: The most comprehensive guide to International Shooting!
Review: The bible for competitors in the international shooting sports. It covers all the rifle and pistol events in depth providing information on physical and mental training as well as anatomy and nutrition for the competitive shooter

Summary: Explain this to a Doctor!
Review: This book is a complete waste of time!...Well not unless you're a med student reviewing for your finals. This book does not give any tips on modern or contemporary competition shooting other than the obvious such as the importance of maintaining balance, breathing, etc. This book is very very slow paced and all explanations and discussions are deeply medical in nature. I would strongly advise the readers to have a doctor on stand by for consultation on the medical terms used EXCESSIVELY in this book.

Last three words: NOT WORTH IT!

Summary: Very detailed, but a little bit old content
Review: This book is very good,it shows that shooting isn't as simple as many people think. From biomechanics to practical shooting, the book is excelent, and everything is explained in a very detailed but very simple and understandble way. The only flaw I've encountered in this book is it's age, and many things described in this book are already obsolete. I am a rookie shooter, with only 2 months of experience, and I found this book extremely useful, my results are rising very quickly thanks to many techniques shown in this book. I think it is a very good aquisition.

Summary: Very detailed, but a little bit old content
Review: This book was written by one of the most famous and successful Soviet shooting coaches and is geared only towards winning the Olympic shooting events. If you want to win at Olympic Rapid Fire pistol, Free Pistol, air pistol/rifle, or Smallbore Rifle, this is THE BOOK to buy. On the other hand, if you are into IPSC, IDPA, Pins, Action Pistol, Cowboy, SASS, Steel, or PPC, then this is probably not the book to buy, though some of the principles will apply. Bullseye shooters will benefit, but those handgunners shooting most of the American sports will be disappointed. Rifle shooters of most disciplines will find this book very useful, and the book is evenly divided between rifle and pistol shooting. The whole focus is on a person who already knows the basics of breathing, trigger control, stance, etc., and wants to hone his physical and mental skills to perfection. At this level, the mental conditioning is nearly equal to the physical requirements. Time tested (and proven) methods of rhythmic breathing, stances that allow for maximum muscle relaxation, eye exercises, and many other esoteric techniques are used. This being said, I used the techniques, practiced 1500 rounds a week for 6 months, and ended up winning a Bronze Medal at the '91 European Action Pistol Championship match in Heidelberg, Germany. So, the book has some applications for all shooters, but is geared totally toward Olympic events. If you are not a national or world class competitor, and don't aspire to be, the book is probably not worth the price. If you are, it probably is. Good luck and DVC.

Summary: Great book for the beginning shooter
Review: This is the book that got me into competitive shooting. It has all of the information that you would need to get started. I highly recommend it.

Rating: 5 stars
Summary: Astonishing depth and scope
Review: You are probably not an educated shooter if you haven't read this book. The chapters on biomechanics, vision, and technique feature some of the best information available for shooters. The author devotes nearly 40 pages to the chapter "aiming" and 35 pages to "releasing the trigger." In a field that has been inundated with bad science, fallacious reasoning, and dubious assumptions, COMPETITIVE SHOOTING is a breath of fresh air. A little dry and "textbookish," but the information content is incredible.
