Rating: Summary: Terrific praise from Jonathan Raban, author of PASSAGE TO JUNEAU Review: "I reread FASTNET, FORCE 10 for at least the fourth time, with pleasure and admiration, as always. For a long time now, it has been a huge favorite of mine; as a writer, I'm dazzled by [John Rousmaniere's] sure-footed handling of a complex narrative, with multiple points of view, all beautifully woven into a continuous and powerful story. After twenty years, it still reads as freshly as ever." Jonathan Raban, author of PASSAGE TO JUNEAU, COASTING, and OLD GLORY and editor of THE OXFORD BOOK OF THE SEA
Rating: Summary: Well written, frightening, easy reading: a must read Review: A well written book. The book is easy to ready, but it still has lots of frightening information. The author describes the Fastnet disaster. He sailed himself on one boat, but he has solid information from several boats. The book has good photographs, in addition to the excellent text.Everyone who is involved in offshore sailing (or considers taking up offsore sailing) should read this book. (This review is based on the hard-cover version of the book.)
Rating: Summary: A true tale that reads like fiction Review: All adventurers, sailors and landlubbers, will find this book gripping and difficult to put down. The descriptive text is enhanced by actual photos demonstrating the strength of the storm. A great armchair read--best by a warm fire and safe on dry land.
Rating: Summary: Gulp... Review: As a newcomer to sailing, I've been very impressed by this book (I read the Italian translation). The descriptions of the gale are vivid and frightening; interesting technical discussions face sad and happy human stories. There's no clear conclusion, however...
Rating: Summary: Could not put the book down... Review: As a sailor that sails the Atlantic coastal waters in a 26',water ballast sailboat,I was in awe reading Mr. Rousmaniere's great work on the Fastnet disaster. The amount of information gathered required much in depth interviewing no doubt. I found it difficult to put the book down once I got into the story.I found the accounts of the incidents of the various boats to be very vivid, and easily pictured. Anyone who sails,or feels the lure of the sea should definitely read this book!

Rating: Summary: Retells an amazing adventure and analyzes the mistakes Review: From reading Perfect Storm two years ago I have started reading adventure stories at sea. This is a fascinating race in extreme conditions which the author describes very well based on his first hand knowledge. But he also analyzes what went wrong and where the blame should be placed if anywhere. The pictures are exceptional and this is an excellent read with a few slow spots. However, it is not my favorite sailing adventure. That would be Fatal Storm, the Inside Story of the Sydney-Hobart race. While it may not have taught as much, the stories were more in-depth and mesmerizing. This book has historical importance from a sailing perspective as it was one of the first races of the modern era with catastrophic results and much was learned for equipment development. A must read for sailors and adventure junkies. Also good for someone wanting to learn about the technical side of racing and weather.

Rating: Summary: A good book to learn what NOT to do. Review: I enjoyed this book and learned some valuable lessons the easy way, from others mistakes. I feel confident now that I will not abandon a foundering ship prematurely or forget to install the wash boards in part due to this book.
Rating: Summary: My Favorite sailing book Review: I have had this book for years, and have read it multiple times even tho' I have a shelf of sailing books to choose from. I cannot reccommend it enough for the sailor or non sailor who would enjoy a truly exciting story. AE
