Summary: I enjoyed greatly the accounts of Southern ocean storms
Review: A wonderfull account of an around the globe sailboat race. The author is able to take you into the teeth of southen latatude storms and the special people it takes to race in them. An exciting account of solo sailboat raceing in a hostile environment.

Summary: Beautiful, scary
Review: I couldn't put this book down. I can't believe these men and women put themselves through these watery hells time after time. I admire them to no end, and I _really_ admire Lundy's ability to get inside their heads. One of the best adventure books I've read since The Snow Leopard.

Summary: What happened to the editor?
Review: I started to read this book (1st 50 pages) and became totally frustrated because the author doesn't know how to tell a story. He jumps from one idea to another never finishing the first. In the first few pages he tells us about sailors capsized waiting for rescue then leaves this story to discuss other things. He says a frenchman pioneered techniques for surviving storms at sea, but then doesn't tell us anything about these techniques. He talks about a bet between two English sailors that resulted in a solo race accross the Pacific but then tells us nothing about this inaugural race, skipping to how a frenchman won the 2nd version......and the discontinities continue, who knows where it's going next. I gave up which is very atypical for me. I usually dig in and finish. I'm fascinated by the subject, but the book needs some serious editing before it is worthy of publishing!

Summary: Entticing example of how the mind may seem to our bountiful
Review: Reading many poems considering the quiestion and nature of the book mentioned seems to gesticulate the innner need for resourcing the enviroment and reducing our thought out words for explaining or continuing to resonate impersonations of te terror and stength of the seas power. But constructtion is destruction in those terms for time is on her side. Furthermore, the lesson learned, that being, resounding mother nature by oceans of words is purposeless like the photograph suggests. The picture I call to mind is the capture of countless thoughss and thousands of eye catching words, those insignias of what is to the also painted familiarty of the same in mostion. However, the words do stimulate the need for all to know thowe things, the book is excellant in its presentation and dogma to increasethe useage and demere of langague.thank you

Summary: Fantastic sailing adventure
Review: This book grabbed me and kept me tied down to my seat for two straight days. I can't believe what these sailors do! Crazy, but fascinating. The author has done an very outstanding job getting inside the minds of these amazing sailors. The writing is so good, so strong, but the story is even stronger. I'm a longtime sailor, and yet I learned new things about sailing and racing. It's hard for me to describe how good the author's writing style is (I'm not a writer!), but I'll just say that I felt like I was on the boats, in the middle of the Southern Ocean, and feeling the spray. Awesome!

Summary: The "Into Thin Air" of Sailing
Review: I agree with the reviewer from Ottawa. This is a very gripping book, although the beginning is a little muddled. I got a similar rush reading "Into Thin Air" last summer. And like Krakauer, Lundy's realistic writing style manages to entertain as well as teach about one of the planet's most fiercecom challenges. Definitely worth picking up.

Summary: second half of book was thrilling , not to be put down
Review: found the first part of the b ook jumped around a bit too much, but once into the race itself, i read it until i was finished. Portions of the story made my heart pound with excitement and with exhaustion contemplating what these individuals were experiencing. I felt their loneliness at times and their complete aloneness fighting for survival in the Southern seas. I wanted to rush out to find someone who sailed or loved reading about the sea to share the story with.. I wanted to read further using the authors bibliography but amazon.com said a number of these books were out of print. Strange, considering their publishing dates are very recent. Anyhow, a great read. Thanks to Mr. Lundy.

Summary: difficult but worth it
Review: This book is so full of information it is difficult to get into, but all of the narrative is well worth the effort. It covers so many of the important aspects related to sailing in very difficult conditions. It also relates aspects of sailboat design associated with sailing in dangerous seas.

Rating: 5 stars
