Summary: An unexpected treasure
Review: This book is one of those unexpected little treasures. After being inundated with crime and romance, this is a very welcome change. One of our members brought this book to the book club to which I belong. None of us are sailors and we certainly don't think one has to be a sailor to enjoy it. The author states that all of the stories truly happened. Some of us found this hard to believe, but on second thought, they must be true because no one could come up with such a collection of delightful and interesting experiences from pure fantasy. It would offer great material for a TV series! The style of writing is excellent, keeping the reader on edge and laughing from beginning to end. I hope we will soon see more examples of this author's work. Stacey H. (Cedar Creek Book Club)

Summary: Ever wonder what it's really like to run a charter yacht?
Review: This book nails it! We are a professional charter crew who has worked the same waters as Captain DeGroot. His stories of the joys and frustrations of running a luxury charter yacht, of the sometimes delightful and sometimes maddening guests, and the atmosphere and culture of the beautiful Eastern Caribbean are entertaining, enlightening, and REAL! We especially relate to his philosophy of chartering and interacting with people in the islands. Bravo, Capt. DeGroot, for capturing the experience in such a delightful, well-written manner.

Summary: Delightful tales in a dream world setting
Review: This book will make even the most serious landlubber want to chuck it all and head for the tropics

Summary: Wish I was there!!
Review: This is a charming accounting of Captain de Groot's chartering years in the Caribbean. He not only discusses the ins and outs of the buisness, but gives the reader appreciation for the difficulties of networking with each island governed separatedly. The Captain clearly has a gift with people as he is exceptional with interfacing with all kinds of people and in all kinds of situations.

Summary: How Cruising the Caribbean Used to be
Review: This is a wonderful book written by one of the first "crewed" charter boat captains in the Caribbean. He remains me of some of the very interesting characters that I have met in the Caribbean.

He writes in a very slow, easy pace that makes you think he is there telling you the story in person.

I would have loved to have sailed with Jan deGroot.

Summary: Copy of December / 99 review Latitude 38
Review: This is one little paperback we plan to have permanently in the shipboard library. Short, friendly and often hilarious, it's a compilation of vignettes about the chartering life, told by the owner/operator of the famous Caribbean charter yacht Ring Andersen. If you've ever chartered, worked on a charter boat, or seen the movie Captain Ron, you'll get a big kick out of No Shoes. It's a great book to have on board for guests who are looking for a quick read too.
