Summary: BEST GRAPPLING BOOK EVER WRITTEN
Review: THIS BOOK BY FAR IS INCREDIBLE. GENE LEBELL THROWS ALOT OF HUMOR INTO THIS BOOK AND SOME RATHER FUNNY LOOKING HUMOROUS TECHNIQUES TO TAKE UP SPACE BUT HE DOES INCLUDE A BIZARRE AMOUNT OF HOLDS IN THIS BOOK. FROM BASICS LIKE HOW TO GRAB TO LEG LOCKS(AWESOME SECTION BY THE WAY) TO EVEN SOME PRO WRESTLING HOLDS YOU'D SEE ON MONDAY NIGHT. I RECOMMEND THIS BOOK TO ANYONE AND EVERYONE WHO IS INTERESTED IN GRAPPLING. THE FORMAT IS VERY EASY TO LEARN AND HE SHOWS SEVERAL TECHNIQUES IN VARIOUS ANGLES AND VARIATIONS. ITS OFF THE HOOK!

Summary: not what you expect...
Review: this book i hate to say was a dissapiontment and would not really recommend it to anybody that was half serious about learning how to do submissions. i like gene lebell but hate to say that more than half the moves in this book could not be performed on anybody that has any idea about the grappling game. there are a FEW moves in this book that could be usefull. but i would recomend going with another title if truely wanting to learn good submissions. this book does have some hummer in it though, but aside from that and the few good moves i dont think this would be a good route to go,if agian you are serious about grappling. please dont mis-understand me, gene is the man, he just didint prove how true that is with this book. agian, im still a fan, just trying to be helpfull to others

Summary: A useful encyclopedia, and entertaining
Review: This book is a good book to get. It has a lot of useful and humorous info on finishing moves. This book I feel is not for the beginner cause it only contains finishing moves and not the positions or strategy for one to set up such finishes. I would recommend getting this book after one has had familiarity with Grappling arts instruction like Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, Shoot Fighting, Catch wrestling. I also recommend getting the book The Fighter's Notebook, which has positions and submissions as well as stand up fighting. Get this and the Gene LeBell book and your straight.

Summary: Great Book that's also fun to read
Review: Very humorous book with tons of submission holds, way too many to memorize. The other reviewers have a point in that some of the moves would be really difficult to pull off in a real combat or tournament situation but what'd they expect? There has to be at least 200 different submission holds. Even if only 1/4 of the moves were feasible, that's still 50 good submission holds. That's way more than any other book on the market. Outnumbering even the fighter's notebook in submission holds. If you're looking for a book that has many different ways to make someone submit, this is the book to get. However, the book doesn't explain how to get someone into a certain position and uses the philosophy of "if you're in this position, you can do this" as opposed to "this is how you get the person into this position and this is how to finish him" but there are so many different submissions from different positions that there's at least one submission no matter where you and your opponent is. You just have to pick out the submissions that are possible and weed out the ones that are too impractical. Overall, a great book.

Summary: Too much fun for a single person
Review: Well let me start out by saying that I am A. A prowrestler, and B. An amatuer grappler. Originally I bought this book to give me Iseas for my "signiture Move". I had prvious submission and Amatuer wrestling experience so I could judge the book from a fairly versed standpoint. Well let my sart with the bad. First of all If you have never grappled and don't known what Scissors, the Guard, the Mount, or a figure 4 are then you should look elseswhere. If you know about positional dominace and Hooks then this is definately the book for you. I took three years of Mixed Grappling so I was not a newbie...The fact is a Newbie would be lost, shocked, and over loaded. This book is for those who have an understanding of how the moves work. Second If you can't think of your own setup, or make your own you might have a hard time. Some of the subs are just pictures of the finish result. Third some of these holds are impossible to pull off, But still their is a huge number that are. If you are familar with BJJ then this book will help you with Subs they noramlly don't train for. If you a Catch Wrestling Fan buy this book immediately. This Is the only book I've seen with actually Catch moves. I bought this book weeks ago and stil haven't put it down since, I've walked around using this books techs on some of the people around me. I even found the sig move, and many more, that I now use in the ring. I would say if you are a grappler then this is a good book to own, but If your new take some classes. It's the only way to learn the fundamentals. PS you will need a partner after reading this book.

Summary: Enjoyable to read, but little to be learned.
Review: While the book does contain MANY submission holds, there are very few that both have a chance of working against an experienced grappler and can be understood and achieved based on the given diagrams and descriptions. Creating a book that can teach an untrained person any real technique is always a difficult proposition, and unfortunatly Gene Lebell, in my opinion, has not put together a book that can accomplish this.

With that said, I really enjoyed parts of this book. Certain sections of the book contain hilarious photographs with captions to match. A particularly enjoyable page details the course of action to take when you attempt to use someone's hair as a handle, only to discover the person is wearing a wig.

Only buy this book if you have some grappling training and are looking for an enjoyable take on it as a whole.

Summary: Good Enough.
Review: While the book has literally hundreds of finishing holds, they are not very well presented. For every effective maneuver there are a dozen which would be difficult to learn even if being taught by an expert. If you don't already know how to lock submissions the book won't be very helpful at all and people will spin and roll out of most of the holds. However the book does offer enough legitimate submissions to make it worth the purchase and also includes sections on how to grapple with a boxer and how to use a club, and it reminds us to be creative when on the mat. All in all I was expecting more but I still think it was worth the money.
