Rating: Summary: Gets you closer to elk than anyone could ever imagine Review: I highly recommend this book to all serious elk hunters. Once you've read this book and applied these tactics, elk seem to fall out of the trees around you (Watch out! They're big animals!). You're foolish not to read this if you are going elk hunting.
Rating: Summary: ONE STAR = ONE LEMON Review: ONE STAR = ONE LEMONThe book is a lemon buy for anyone minimally familiar with game management. It offers very little useful insight into the subject. The chapter on tactics [Chapter 7] provides laughably narrow perspective. I expected that the text covers far wider range of environments than the authors chosen to deal with. The chapter on strategy [Chapter 15] has an artificial division on residential and nonresidential. It really does not include many well known (and very useful) strategies. The book just boosts around the topic, in an exaggerated "hunter's" manner.I guess most people agree that strategy is the most tricky and important component of any hunt. Only 11 short pages (of about 300) are on strategy. I find it hard to believe into... [check it out --- see Table of Contents]. The authors' effort to dress the style as academic is another shortcoming of the book. The book is a thick volume of primitive information, presented in a lengthly and heavy manner. The book has no clear definitions. It does not contain summary notes, and is difficult to apply to real cases. This book came as a big disappointment to me. It does not worth the time (and the money) to spend on. I much regret to get into this trap. Try other options!

Rating: Summary: The best book overall I have read on hunting elk. Review: The book is easy to read--early high school reading level. Since reading the book about 10 years ago, I have taken 15 elk and hunted in several states. Hart gives many ways to hunt elk. I have used all of them. He also gives many "no no's" in hunting elk. I have practiced avoiding all of them. Overall, the book is well worth reading. I would recommend that all serious elk hunters have a copy of the book as a reference guide. Dick Jorgenson
