Rating: Summary: Pro's secrets of adjusting to lanes revealed! Review: "The Pro Approach" is a unique and wonderful book. There are lots of bowling books on the market that deal with the physical game, but this is the only book I've ever seen that unveils the secrets of how a professional bowler reads and attacks a lane condition. Mathews has managed to turn an art few could ever hope to master into a science that any intelligent player can understand. The "Pro Approach" gives the bowler a complete systematic arsenal of adjustments that should help any 170+ bowler improve his game. Mathews' book has a chart in it that is worth the entire price of the book by itself. The chart allows a bowler to quickly and confidently find the strike line based off what they left on the previous shot. He also provides a couple of handy systems for shooting spares. (I can't wait to get all the adjustments memorized. I have been amazed at how well these adjustments work when I have taken his book to my practice sessions.) In addition to the adjustments chart, "The Pro Approach" gives useful guidelines on the 8 basic lane conditions and includes sections on the mental game, practice, equipment, setting up an arsenal, etc. The sections that deal with bowling balls are somewhat out of date because of their emphasis on static balance and their failure to address Proactive ball technology, but this book is still an absolute must for any serious bowler's library.

Rating: Summary: what a disappointment Review: based on all the other reviews for this book, i was really looking forward to reading this. when i got finished reading this all i could ask myself was "this can't be all there is?" the writer makes things way more complicated then they need to be, and there isn't anything earth shattering included. the basic stuff, he makes sound so complicated that you need to be a rocket scientist to figure out what he's talking about. this book contains information for the intermediate bowler, but he or she better have an iq of 200 to figure it out.save yourself some money, go bowl a few games and actually work on things that you need to fix. you know what they are. it will be a better use of your time and money.
Rating: Summary: Garanteed to Improve Your Game!!! Review: I bought this book at the begining of last season. I had to read it twice to grasp the language. I have been bowling for 15 years and understood the concepts but never heard the terms Larry used. Once you figure out what he is talking about the lanes just seem to open up and the shots and adjustments become second nature. Last season my average jumped from 190 to 207. That was the highest average the house I bowled in has seen in the last 5 years. This house has the most difficult shot in town. My average jumped to 219 in the easy house. I credit this book for my making the local associations allstar team. Only 15 bowlers are selected out of nearly 5,000 sanctioned bowlers each year. While the section on balls is outdated everything else is spot on to improve your game. This book is short and to the point. Read it, Practice it, and take over your league. BE WARNED THIS BOOK IS NOT FOR BEGINERS THOUGH!
Rating: Summary: Very technical for advanced bowlers Review: I bought this book two years ago. This book is for more advanced bowlers who can understand the technical aspects of bowling. My average was around 178, and I just couldn't seem to improve. Since studying this book, My average is now 197. I'm bowling the best of my life at over 50. I have now bowled two 700 series and one 296 game. Yea. the last shot was pretty shakey! I still return to this book and reread different areas. It takes some time to understand..but if your looking to learn how to move on the approach, and trying to understand oil patterns. etc. causing different lane conditions, then this is an excellent reference book.
Rating: Summary: where has this book been for all of my life Review: I have been bowling for 31 years. Usually 2 or 3 leagues a week, and occasional tournaments. I have never averaged over 197. My high series is 758 and I have a high game of 298. After purchasing Mr. Mathews book, and spending a few weeks reading and re-reading it, I shot an 802, on games of 268, 265, and 269. Two weeks later, I shot my first ever sanctioned 300. The alignment and adjustment methods, which I have never found in any other book, have allowed me to improve dramatically, in a very short period of time. I struggled for a long time, always thinking it was me. I felt my physical game was not strong enough. NOW, I know it was a lack of TACTICS. Larry has made a dream come true for me, and I will be forever grateful.
Rating: Summary: "THE BOOK" from a Mathematical perspective> Review: I have been involved in the game of bowling for 23 years, and have experienced very little success. After purchasing Mr. Mathews book "the pro approach", my fortunes changed dramatically, overnight. Within one month, I bested my high series, high game, and won the singles and doubles (703, then 714) in City Tournament. Four nights later in league I almost realized my ultimate dream, a 300 game. I threw the 12 th shot very poorly, because I was just so nervous, and still got 8. A 298, and 2 700 series, when my previous high game was 265; and my best series was 672. Dreams and Tactics, like Larry says, go hand in hand. Thank you!! Thank You!! you are truly, the bowling professor!!
Rating: Summary: what a disappointment Review: I read this book 2 or 3 times the first week after I received it. After being in a slump for several weeks, the book seemed to get me back on track. It inabled me to learn more about my particular style in conjunction with where I should stand and throw. The mathmatical approach has benefitted my game a great deal. In addition, the description of the 8 typical lane conditions and how to adjust to them is invaluable. The main thing I learned, the fun is in the journey. Concentrate on execution and the scores will come. Where before, I was worried more about getting strikes. Also, the information on tracking lanes helped me focus more on me than what the lanes were doing. If you can't execute and hit your marks, then the scores will not come. It helped me become honest with myself and to practice better execution. It's not the lanes, it's the attitude and adjustment abilities. Over the last two weeks, I've averaged right at 225. My league average before the book is right at 200 and now I'm making a run to improve. The first week I shot 608. The second week I shot 737. It is definately worth buying if you are serious about pushing your game to another level

Rating: Summary: Written for pros, only Review: I've just had a quick review of the book, having just received it today. Focused on the 1st chapter covering alignments. The book is very mathematical and uses lots of technical terms, which are not explained (no glossary) or illustrated. It is important to emphasise that this book is NOT meant for beginners.Having bowled for over 10 years, I thought this book would be useful. I've not had the privilege of a coach & hence, am depending on books to improve my technique. This is my 1st book on bowling and I am not familiar of the technical terms such as boards, swing, point etc. The theory sounds sensible enough & I'm confident I'd be able to follow his instructions successfully once I work out the terms precisely! If unable to understand the 1st chapter (due to the terms),it appears the rest of the book will not be of much value as the chapter is a key foundation for success. I hope the author will be able to include a glossary & more illustrations to cater to other bowlers. I'm a little disappointed in the lack of explanation of terms. In the meantime, I'll have to keep looking for definitions of the terms used in other books. Recommended ONLY IF you are familiar with bowling jargon.
