Summary: Still splendid after all these years!
Review: This book - in all of its previous editions - was always a delightful companion for the outdoors enthusiast, full of wit, cheekiness, and wry observational humor. It's also the single best source of information about camping & hiking gear (philosophically and materially). The text's new, "conversational" dialogue between Fletcher and Rawlins takes some getting used to, but the different perspectives of the two authors have really increased the book's usefulness and value - Rawlins seems perfectly suited to serve as Fletcher's authorial mate and foil. Again, the practical info. is priceless, but the real star of the book continues to be the writing. I don't know how many times I have (once again) found myself laughing aloud while reading passages from this book. This is the camping & hiking book against which all others are measured (and I've certainly read more than my share of them).

Summary: When they say complete they mean it.
Review: This book is amazingly extensive. The authors convey not only an astounding (bordering on absurd) knowledge of the various gear a hiker carries, but also an infectious longing and reverence for nature herself.

Summary: A Unparalleled Work: Truly "The Hiker's Bible"
Review: This is possibly the longest single book I've ever read and I do not at all regret reading it. On the contrary I enjoyed it, learned from it, and was entertained by it. I have been a regular reader of Backpacker magazine and plenty of other hiking related material for a long time (and am an experienced hiker). This book is the best and most complete single book on the subject in existence on the subject (at least in English - not that I know of any other in any other language). No if, and's or but's - simply the best.

Summary: exhaustive primer
Review: You really get so much for your money with this work. It is comprehensive, detailed and inspires you to load up and head out.

Can be used as a "reference book" in terms of looking up specific information, or as an exhaustive "primer" that serves as a walking/hiking manual.

Either way, for this wonderful hobby, the authors did it justice.

Well-done!
