Summary: Mastering Rebreathers
Review: After just finishing a rebreather course myself, I found Mastering Rebreathers to be an especially valuable reference and in-depth informational resource. Pertinent aspects of all types of rebreathers are covered, plus there are sections with easy to understand background information on rebreather related physics and physiology. The author has also included assembly, predive, and post dive checklists for some of the most popular units, constant PO2 dive tables, and even MSDS's for several types of scrubber material. This is a "must have" book for anyone who dives rebreathers, or who is thinking about diving them.

Summary: DIVERS magazine gives it two thumbs up
Review: Don't let the textbook-style layout scare you away-as a diver who enjoys continuing education, and needs a little refresher now and again, I found I could not put down Mastering Rebreathers. Jeff presents his information in an easy to-understand format that follows the natural flow of learning. The "Introduction," "History," and "Types of Rebreathers" chapters lay out the basis of difference and development in open circuit SCUBA, the semi-closed rebreather, and the fully closed rebreather. Sections on physics and physiology follow. Scared yet? Don't be. These latter two chapters are designed to let any interested reader gain a good understanding of diving's effects. Chapters on theory and rebreather designs are also easy to understand, and leave you with an appreciation for the uses and limitations of rebreathers, as well as for the people who dive them. And the driver's seat chapters-"Preparing for the Dive," "Diving Techniques," "Post Dive Procedures," and "Long Term Maintenance"-give great information along with clear, concise instructions. Wondering what to do if there is a problem? No problem. Emergency Procedures" covers not only what to do if, but also spells out the recognition, and more importantly the avoidance, of most problems. The final two chapters cover travel with your rebreather and "Where To Go From Here," a reminder to keep your training current and dive within your limits.

Summary: A Comprehensive Introduction to Rebreathers
Review: Had this book been titled "A Comprehensive Introduction to Rebreathers" I would have certainly given it 5 stars. My review is written with the desire to catch the attention of propsective buyers so that they can see what this book isn't. It certainly couldn't be considered a comprehensive reference for those who have or are on their way toward mastering rebreathers.

Anyone doing any type of advanced/technical diving that might have a need or interest in learning about rebreathers or furthering their education in rebreathers wouldn't consider a book a valid means of training. We all know we ought to seek instruction from an experienced (I didn't say qualified because that term is loosely used in the diving industry) person or organization. We shouldn't be naive enough to be misled by a title that makes us think, "if I buy and read this book I too can be a master of rebreathers." I suggest we let the title explain what's in the book. I didn't look at the book in a bookstore and then come to Amazon to see what others thought about it. I found it on Amazon, didn't find a detailed explanation of the book's contents and read all the reviews. I was left expecting much more.

The book does contain a wealth of information that I will refer back to often in the future. If you know nothing about rebreathers and want a comprehensive introduction, I can't think of any better book than this.

Summary: Very Comprehensive - A Real Bargain!
Review: Having written the Forward to this book, it may seem odd that I find the need to comment further via this forum. I was very fortunate to have seen a pre-publication version, but now that I hold the finished product in my hands, I am even further impressed with Jeff's masterpiece!

A tremendous amount of work went into gathering all of this complex information, distilling it into understandable prose, and presenting it in a way that would make any educator proud. This book stands unambiguously as the definitive text on rebreathers, how they're designed, and how that should be used to enhance the quality, enjoyment, and safety of underwater activities.

Once again, I congratulate Jeff on a job well done!

Summary: Outstanding Rebreather Book
Review: I've recently had "a read" with Jeff's recent book and found it to be very comprehensive and extremely well done. Jeff has obviously put a great deal of effort in putting the material together in a form which makes it easy to read and comprehend. The book is written in clear, concise language that anyone having even a passing interest in rebreathers can understand and enjoy. This book would certainly serve well in an intoductory rebreather diving class.

As a prospective rebreather user and builder I was very interested in practically all aspects of the book and I would highly recomend it to anyone anticipating using a rebreather.

Summary: The "Bottom" Line on Rebreathers
Review: Let's not mince words - if you have ANY interest at all in rebreathers - where they came from, how they work, should I try one - you MUST read this book.

Jeff Bozanic has distilled a tremendous amount of techical information and practical experience, his own and others', and synthesized a masterful introduction to rebreather diving. There are extremely thorough treatments of the phyisical chemistry of the gas laws, the physiology of diving, and the decompression problems peculiar to breathing mixtures other than air. The sections on the maintenence and use of the currently available recreational rebreather units are invaluable.

Pleasant surprises are the marvelous chapter on the history of open and closed circuit diving, and the graceful prose despite the technical density.

Rebreathers may not be for everyone, but this book is!
