Rating: Summary: Turn off your television and have an enjoyable read Review: National Geographic this one isn't, however, it reads well. Think about it... Africa. The elements, the animals, the insects the basic survival skills needed to endure such hunts is far above what many may think. This books gives you the insight from an experienced bushman.Think about this... if you fell dead (from sheer exhaustion lets say) within minutes... yes MINUTES, the vultures would be upon your carcass and within an hour (between the scavangers) one would be completely devoured with the exception of bone clean up by other carrion eaters through out the rest of the day. MINUTES... it's that kind of place
Rating: Summary: Book doesn't capture the essence of Africa Review: If you are interested in poorly written campfire stories about rampaging animals -- enjoy. Took on Safari, wanted a book to capture the essence of the wild life. Having hunted with friends I thought that a book about hunting would give insight to the big game, how to track, their habits etc. The book is one gory hunting tale after another. Not going to give you a vision of what these mighty creatures are really like up close. I saw plenty of big game, and nothing got shot or rampaged killing people left and right
Rating: Summary: Ready for a safari Review: Wasn't really aware of some of the negative interactions that humans can have with critters in Africa, such as being dragged off and eaten. Didn't feel too uncomfortable about getting eaten or gored or stomped to death, but the snake stories sounded like kind of a bummer. Pretty good reading about the dark continent, without having to go to the hospital.
Rating: Summary: Outstanding! Review: This is the best book I have read in a long time. Capsticks writing style captures the readers attention in a way that makes you feel like you are walking through the bush next to him. I recommend this book to anyone interested in the excitement of an African safari.
Rating: Summary: A style that puts you there with him... Review: I have had an interest in Africa since boyhood. The easy conversational style in which Capstick writes makes you feel that he is your PH telling the stories while you sit around the fire with a full belly, enjoying your evening sundowners. It was not until I finally made it to Africa that I realized just how realistic Capstick's writing is. Easy to read, exciting, real. What more can you want in a book? In spite of a well stocked library I find myself coming back to the "Death in the..." books over and over. Long grass was the first and is still the best! Ted Ellis
Rating: Summary: Death in the grass review Review: This book is great! Espically if you like Big Game hunting. lots of great stories about lions and leapords. if you like comedy/ action thers some things youll enjoy. just a great over all book>
Rating: Summary: Tremendous Book Review: Peter Capstick is an incredibly good storyteller. He transports you right into the bushveldt. It does become annoying that most of the chapters begin with almost identical stories about some annonymous person whose life is about to be cut short by a less than pleasant animal, but this is more than forgivable. It is a great book for any hunting enthusiast.
Rating: Summary: if you want to interest your kid in reading.... Review: Let's say your kid don't read nuthin' but stuff with pictures. Read him the story about the man-eating lion, and then lay the book down in the living room. He's gonna read the rest of it. I've got to go make a sandwich now.
Rating: Summary: Get ready to quit your job and move to Africa . . . Review: Peter takes you there. This book is written for all the folks who went to college and started a new job in corporate America and wished they hadn't. Live vicariously through Peter as he takes you on his many adventures in the wilds of Africa. He is the antithesis of the great Victorian British White Hunter who is never supposed to be afraid of anything. Peter makes no bones about being deathly afraid of the consequences of poor actions on more then one occasion. For a change, you get the true feeling of what it is like to truly contest life and death with the worlds toughest animals. A thoroughly good read . . .
Rating: Summary: Fantastic reading Review: Capstick has captured the soul of Africa,as well as the animals he hunted and releases them in the pages of this fantastic book
