Summary: Dead End
Review: Over the last few months my family and I have tried various outings in this book and found many errors - wrong turns, closures, vague directions. I have given up using it, can't afford to waste the time. An overhaul is sorely needed. I have to rate it two stars.

Summary: DON'T CAMP WITHOUT IT
Review: So here it is, getting to be the height of camping season in California, and I was ready to go. Got the gear, have my food, all set- now I need a campsite. This book provided all the information I needed to have an amazing weekend out in the woods. The author's comments on the campsite, available hikes, and scenic wonders of the area were spot-on and added a great deal to the trip. Whether you're planning a trip in the Sierras, the Bay Area, near LA or on the coast, this book is a must-have!

Summary: Try the new edition
Review: The first thing you will notice in this year's new edition is that all the directions are rewritten with a lot more precision, often to the nearest one-tenth of a mile. This is a big improvement over any of the previous editions. If you have an old one, even from 2000, this makes a huge difference on your trips.

Summary: guidebook factory
Review: The idea of a totally comprehensive listing of California campgrounds is a great idea but this book fails when it comes to accurate information. I really question whether the team of writers actually visited the very campsites they describe. Too ambitious an undertaking, needs editing and streamlining.

Summary: The Man is A Camping God!
Review: This author is a camping god! Bow down before him!
If you are camping in California this is the ONLY book you will ever need, throw the rest away!
The details are precise and accurate. Directions to Camps are explicit and perfect. This is well written - easy to follow and contains all you will ever need to find your way around California.
We recently used it on a 6 week vacation to Calfornia - trust me this is the most precious item you can take.
Buy it! Forget the ratings he uses in the book as these are meaningless, and if you do not know California then get a good map - otherwise you will need nothing else. It has all the camp site numbers and infinite detail about their facilities.
I wish I could shake the author's hand!

Summary: Best Darn Camping Book in the USA
Review: This book is the answer to every California camper's prayers. We used it constantly to find our campsite for the evening when we traveled up and down the state. We especially enjoyed using it to find the small remote campgrounds that were practically empty. We recently moved to Virginia and I am desperately looking for this book's equivilant. We passed our California Camping book down to a neighbor who will hopefully treasure it as much as we did.

Summary: The only camping book you need!
Review: This book is wonderful, I have the 95-96 edition but I love the new layout and the maps are great! Whenever we go camping the first thing we do is pull out this book. This book has made it possible for our family of six to explore California and teach our children to appreciate nature.

Summary: Excellent Camping Resource
Review: This book proves to be an excellent resource for locating campgrounds. The facts are generally accurate, for example, you can easily tell if a campground accomodates an RV or pets or has piped water. However, the notes based on opinion, such as seneic rating and the extra "trip notes" are just that--the opinion of the author--and sometimes are radically different than what I would assign the campground. We have visited many wonderful, remote campgrounds that have secnic ratings of "4." It's best not to let these numbers influence your selection of a particular campground. But overall, a MUST for any California camper.

Rating: 2 stars
Summary: Mostly Disappointing
Review: This book should have been called Northern California Camping rather than California Camping. I started reading reviews about places up north, and it gives plenty of descriptions and commentary. They're much longer than the ones in Los Angeles. I don't think he's camped down here. Just compiled a list of campsites here. Also, his rating scale is very questionable. One campground I know to be a virtual parking lot, he gave a 9 out of 10 rating for. I should have bought a different book.
This book will be helpful if I decide to take a camping trip up north. otherwise, thumbs down :(
