Rating: Summary: Synopsis of "Improve Your Squash Game" Review: Practicing is fun? Yes, it can be. The book "Improve Your Squash Game" by Pippa Sales certainly makes it so. There are sufficient practices, covering every shot played in squash, to keep players of every level interested.

"Improve Your Squash Game" is easy to read and use. From the introduction, where you will discover why practicing is important to the final chapter on Conditioned Games, "Improve Your Squash Game" is filled with valuable tips on how to improve every shot in squash. There are practices you can do alone and practices you can do with a partner. There are also diagrams to illustrate each shot and other valuable points such as "where on the front wall to hit the ball for a length drive." The chapter on "14 Tips To Improve Your Overall game" reiterates what every player should be doing on court but so often forgets, such as "Use all four corners of the court"; "Practice all areas of your game, not just the shots you find easy"; and "Vary the pace of the game." These tips and the others are explained in the text. Court movement is a skill many players have difficulty with. The tip "Move to where you want to hit the ball from. Do not move directly to the ball," which is illustrated by a diagram and a more detailed explanation, will help those who struggle with this common problem. The tip "Boast with an objective - for example, to move your opponent forward - not for the sake of boasting" can be found in the chapter on the Boast. This tip points out a common mistake among squash players and makes you more aware of when to hit a boast. With "Improve Your Squash Game," you can venture into the realm of the volley boast and the attacking volley where you will discover how to go for the nick. The chapter on the lob will inspire you to practice this very effective and often under utilized shot. The following tips, "Use the lob to change the pace of the game and to break your opponent's rhythm. If your opponent likes a fast paced game, slow him or her down by lobbing" and "A good lob can change your situation from one of defense to one of attack. The lob helps you to regain control of a rally." The many simple but powerful tips can help players raise their game. The chapter on Conditioned Games provides players with game situations in which to practice the skills learned in the book. Conditioned games can be a lot of fun because they create a competitive situation but maintain the focus on practicing particular shots. To round out this book is an appendix with stretching exercises, a listing of the World Squash Federation member organizations, a glossary and an extensive suggested reading list.
