Rating: Summary: The "bible" of all judo Review: One of the three Budo (along with Aikido and Karate) of Japan, right from the horses mouth. Jigoro Kano is the founder of Judo and the author of this impressive book. "Best Judo" by Isao Inokuma and Nobuyuki Sato comes in a close second, packed with dynamic photographs and some more modern applications, but "Kodokan Judo" will always be the bible of any Judo player. The old photos of Kano himself demonstrating techniques are priceless. If you buy one Judo book, make this it.

Rating: Summary: The Holy Grail of the Sport Review: Reading the words of the sport's creator is like a free ticket on a time machine to beginings Judo. The illustrations and technique description are invaluable. I will often take my copy with me to the dogo to help answer questions concerning technique when an instructor is busy with someone else.

Rating: Summary: You can only trust the inventor of judo, Jigoro Kano Review: The only guide you will need. Include it in your training of the art of judo. Why I like it because it improved my skills and my look on life.
Rating: Summary: This book is a virtual Judo bible Review: This book is fantastic. It not only focuses on Judo techniques, but the theories and history behind Judo. Written by the founder of Judo, this book is excellent. Without a doubt, one of the best Judo books I have ever read.
Rating: Summary: A "must have" for all serious judoka! Review: This is "the" classic judo book; afterall, it's written by Kano himself. The evolution of the martial art to sport judo gives the reader the true meaning of what judo is all about. There is enough here, to keep the expert learning and to keep the novice from getting bored. An absolute "must."
Rating: Summary: judo basics Review: This is a great book, and you're getting it right from the source, Sensei Jigaro Kano. The only ( yet signifigant) flaw of this book is the poor photo quality - as other reviewers have noted. A lot of this is due to the photos being undoctored, old-school shots of the actual masters and founders of the sport. Supplement this with Best Judo (Inokuma/Sato) and you will learn a lot before you hit the mats. Students of BJJ can also do themselves a favor by checking out where all the Brazilian moves came from.
Rating: Summary: Great but for the some of the bad photographs Review: This is a great book, no question. It is a wonderful overview and reference guide. I guess I take exception to the complaints Brian Glennon. I think the introduciton of so-called "non-judo technique" can only serve to strengthen Judo as a whole. As Inokuma Sensei states, "the judo contest takes the form of a fight" it seems silly and counter productive to limit the arsenal of the fighter simply to please someone's sense of aestetics. Furthermore I think Glennon's complaint stems from a deep seated resentment that some "non-judo" techniques can defeat "judo" techniques. Sato sensei himself thought that Sambo's version of kesa gatame was superior to Judos and adopted the sambo form. I am also not sold on the absolute importance of Kata. I think Judo kata are far superior to the kind found in many other traditional martial arts forms, especially since it involves another person, and movement (though pre-rehearsed). I think the BJJ people have the practical fighting side of Judo down because the art teaches self defense and fighting in a much less structured way. Though I have some reservations about being a judo traditionalist (it certainly is not for me) I do have a great deal of love for judo, and think that all grapplers, especially gi grapplers need both Kodokan Judo, and Best Judo, as these two volumes are excellent references sure to help improve ones grappling game.
