Rating: Summary: A down to earth, gentle guide to horse training. Review: Reading this book and watching the videos that go with it is the best way to really understand what John Lyons is all about. If you have ever trained a dog, you understand what conditioned-response is, and he teaches you how to apply the same theory to training horses. John Lyons does not hold himself out as a horse-whisperer guru type trainer, but rather as a guy who has a very logical, conditioned-response method of dealing with horses. I liked the way he explained the techniques and his emphasis on safety for the trainer and the horse. Some things are hard to picture from his explanation in the book, so watching the videos put it all together for me. (An example is the hitting the horse on the leg bit that another reviewer mentioned. If you saw the video and saw what he was doing, you probably would not feel uncomfortable with it.) I have found this book the most novice-friendly book of its type.
Rating: Summary: 6/5/99, I saw John in Sacramento, CA Review: The way that John and the horse bonded was very special. It was very emotional for me to see a man and animal become so close in such a short period of time. I suppose that I am a weinie but I wonder what that horse will feel when his new buddy, John, is not there for him in the days ahead. I have been around the world twice, seen two world's fairs, and even been to Texas, but I have never seen anything like what I saw today. The clinic was truly one of the most inspirational and emotional exhibitions I have ever seen. Keep up the good work, John. Very respectfully, John Irwin
Rating: Summary: Your Horse Wants you to read and use this book. Review: This book by one of the finest teachers and horse trainers of all times, is not one to miss. With study and practice this book can take you from a novice rider with an unschooled or unmanageable horse to a happy horse and a happier rider. This book is for anyone that wants to be a better horseman. If I could only have one book on horse training it would be this one.
Rating: Summary: The most humane horse training methods I have seen Review: This book is the end all say all of horse training. Not onlydoes John Lyons take you step by step through the creation of anobedient and willing partner, but he does it with out ever hurting or threatening to hurt the horse. By using John Lyons methods your horse becomes willing and eager to do what you ask of him, not bullied into listening through fear of punishment. I would heartily recomend this book to any horse owner who wants thier horse to be a life partner, and not just a beast of burden bullied into cooperating.
Rating: Summary: What a GREAT BOOK, we loved it, educational and witty! Review: This book offers a full training program for the young horse with tips for your older horses too! We have implemented these training techniques with all 3 of our horses, 2 weanling and an 8 year old. Would not be as far as we are with them, without this wonderful book. Mr. Lyons is fantastic! Highly Recommended for all levels of training.
Rating: Summary: Lyons on Horses Review: This book really sucked the big one!! It was sooo bad. I don't think anyone should ever read this book. It was filled with false equine information, and was just a plain dumb stroy. I don't see how anyone could like this book. It was sooo bad i even asked a bunch of my firends and they hated it to. Noone likes this book and should not even be in print!!
Rating: Summary: A must reading for would be horseman! Review: This book was instrumental in developing training techniques for Majo, my young Ibberian stallion. It is a wonderful book of techniques that work! If your goal is partnership with your horse than you want to read John's book and then read John's book again and again.
Rating: Summary: Wow, what a book!! Review: This is the bible of horse training. I felt like John wrote this book about MY horse. Everything he said worked wonderfully. This man really knows how horses think and how to comunicate with them. It really helped my to understand what my horse was thinking and how to deal with certain problems. I highly recommend this book!!
Rating: Summary: Finally...a clear description of the "magical" process. Review: Though Lyons is not an author by trade, he should be commended for writing a specific, inclusive guide that any layman can follow. Unlike Dorrance and Hunt, Lyons doesn't leave us wondering about a mysterious, magical intangible--he gives us a step by step process for resistance free training and shows how it can be applied by any willing trainer. His writing is logical and concise, easy to follow. Hats off to ya, John.
Rating: Summary: Helpful, but not the end-all beat-all best horse trng book. Review: While there is helpful information in this book about horse
psychology and motivations, several of the chapters are difficult
to follow. The section on teaching a horse to lead without getting ahead or lagging behind is extremely difficult to visualize.
The are few diagrams and pictures so it is hard to follow exactly
what the text is describing. I would not consider this my main
book on horse training, but sections of it are helpful for
getting into your horse's head.
