Summary: Great planning guide
Review: ever dream of playing the old course? allan makes it possible. he gives you everything. i've created a relationship with the Sporting Laird hotel, a wedge away from the old course. they are already my friends. inquired at the old course and carnoustie for me. no problem as a single. i received the book in early february and will arrive in st. andrews apr 4th. so many great courses within 10 miles. do it now, not someday, cause there will be a time when someday never comes.

Summary: Finally, a practical travel book
Review: For those golf oriented travelers (and for that matter, even for the non-golfer), Allan Ferguson created a practical and easy to read guide to travel and golf in Scotland. It shatters the myth that only specialty golf packages can really provide a memorable 'Scotish golf experience.'

The book is structured in a logical and useful manner and provides excellent tips and suggestions. For the un-initiated, the actual tips on travel, including such mundane things such as how to make phone calls there, a check list on thing to pack, and even where and how to rent a car, were very useful. Included were suggestions on how to budget for the trip and even included mini-tours and descriptions to help create itineraries. His profiles of some 60 courses are clear, accurate and useful.

The first trip abroad creates the most excitement, and anxiety. This book was written in a comfortable and straight forward manner. Having been able to read the book, plan the trip and actually put it to use gave me a lot of appreciation for the effort that went into it. I recommend this book for golf enthusiasts who are planning a trip to Scotland and willing to take a little time to save some real money.

Summary: Packed with helpful hints -- a must for "do-it-yourselfers"
Review: Having just returned from a week in Scotland which was totally planned around the suggestions in this book, I can't tell you how essential this book is to a successful golf trip to Scotland. Allan Ferguson provides all the necessary information to book your trip from tee times to car rental tips to even bringing a wool knit cap (for which we are eternally grateful!) His love for the history of golf and Scotland shines through his wonderfully refreshing writing style which makes this "how to" book a delight to read. While the book helps those who must play St. Andrews, it is packed with information for those interested in the non-marquee courses, which we found equally as challenging and enjoyable to play.

Summary: Great planning guide
Review: I am a "do it yourself" traveler, and like to get off the beaten track. This book has a lot of great suggestions on courses, itineraries and places to stay. It goes into quite a bit of detail on the more famous courses; as an example, there is a whole chapter on St. Andrews. There is useful information about playing courses like Carnoustie and Turnbury as well. But best of all are the course descriptions of many less well known courses.
We are going in June, and when I return, I will post another review as to how accurate the guide is.
I have used the book to determine which courses we will play, where to stay, and how to get tee times at some of the more difficult courses. I also like the web site references he gives, which allow you to see a little more info on lodging.

Summary: Golf In Scotland
Review: I am currently planning a trip to Scotland to play golf in 2002. I found this book very informative and detailed with valuable information on planning this trip. He has information that can help you determine if you would like to use a tour service or not. You also get a good comparison of actual cost vs. tour prices. If you decide to do your own booking, he gives good suggestions on how it should be planned and all of information you need to book golf courses, hotels and transportation. This is must reading for anyone planning a golf trip to Scotland!

Summary: Alan knows Scotland
Review: I contacted Alan after receiving some quotes from pricey tour operators for a 10 day golf trip to scotland . Besides saving us a great deal of money his insights on where to stay and which course's to play made our trip a tremendous success. From airfare to B&B's with heated towel racks Alan knows Scotland.
