Rating: ![1 stars](http://www.reviewfocus.com/images/stars-1-0.gif) Summary: Why settle for second best Review: Revolutionary? Hardly. Typical of people today to want a shortcut. Rather than put in the true effort, we want an easier method; something 'revolutionary' (as if training dogs has changed). Why not do it right? Your dog is an investment, so my suggestion is to invest the time/expense required. Go for the best of the best and read either Bill Tarrant and/or Delmar Smith? The 'Delmar Smith Method' is the bible of the sport, and I am sure that Wolters has studied this thoroughly. [Just look at the book covers - do you want a picture of your dog with you pointing at the clouds, or do you want a dog that will end a successful day of hunting at your side?]

If you want a dog that will do what you say because he is afraid or because he's associated you with pain... Get this book. If you want a dog that does things you say because he loves you and wants to please you... DON'T get this book. Richard Wolters can train dogs, and the dogs are attentive. THERE ARE MUCH BETTER WAYS. This book shows you how to train a dog from a narrow minded approach. It assumes a dog is stupid and can only learn through associating things with pain. Building a relationship with a dog and teaching him to hunt with a man can be one of the most satisfying things someone can do. I have seen dogs that are much smarter than I am. Hunting dogs are just waiting for you to give them the chance to please you. As Bill Tarrant said... They have all the qualities that God wants man to have. I bought two books... This one and Mike Goulds "The Labrador Shooting Dog". In my humble opinion... Mike has figured it all out. He loves dogs more than I do... and from what I hear, they love him just as much. But this is all just coming from a guy who loves to train dogs and wants them to be the best and happiest they can be.
Rating: ![5 stars](http://www.reviewfocus.com/images/stars-5-0.gif) Summary: Gun Dog Review: Richard Wolters work was recommended to me by a fellow bird hunter. I found the book to be well written and to the point, pardon my pun. I purchased this book in preperation for my first Bird Dog. I tested Mr. Wolters technique on our family dog, a Beagle, and I was able to have her stopping on a dime to "WHOA". And after just ten minutes I was able to get her to Quarter back and forth across a baseball field. I can't wait for my hunting dog to arrive so that I can begin training him for the next hunting season. "Gun Dog" has definitley become my training bible.
Rating: ![1 stars](http://www.reviewfocus.com/images/stars-1-0.gif) Summary: a less than useful classic Review: This book may appeal to the novice hunter/dog trainer lacking both experience and the facilities necessary to properly train a gun dog. Unfortunately, the prescribed training methods (like the old bird wing on the fishing pole trick) provide fun games to play with a puppy, but do NOT help to develop a working field dog. Buy a more modern book by Tarrant and/or others instead of this one.
Rating: ![5 stars](http://www.reviewfocus.com/images/stars-5-0.gif) Summary: Use only as advised Review: This book should have been read by the two guys who were out fishing and managed to lose both a new SUV and hunting dog. According to the story, they were ice-fishing on some northern lake, and they'd brought a couple of sticks of dynamite to blow a hole in the ice. Unfortunately, when they lit and threw the stick of dynamite, their retriever decided to fetch it and started to bring it back to them. Since they couldn't run as fast as the dog on the slippery ice, at that point they decided that discretion was the bitter part of valor, and started shooting at the dog hoping to stop him from returning with the stick of dynamite. Unfortunately they both missed, and at that point the dog, who wasn't a complete idiot and knew when he wasn't wanted, decided to take shelter under the new SUV, which was parked nearby on the ice. Before they could shoo him out from under the vehicle, the dynamite stick exploded, blowing a big hole in the ice, into which the new SUV fell and sank, never to be seen again, along with the presumed remains of their overly enthusiastic but somewhat misguided hunting dog. Well, I hope their next dog worked out better, and for those with less traumatic gun-dog experiences who are still undaunted by the call of the wild, this book should be a valuable training guide.

Which surprised me since this is the first dog I have ever trained. People compliment me whenever they see my dog in action; whether it be at the lake, park or in the feild. Highly recomended!
