Summary: A Great Read!
Review: Accomplishes what the authors set out to do -- and more. Whether you're planning the trek yourself or not, well worth the read.

Summary: Practical Mountain Climbing
Review: Although my "mountaineering" is limited to hikes in the Canadian Rockies, I found Climbing Mount Kilimanjaro a fascinating and informative how-to on summiting this high point in Africa. The book is dense with practical tips on getting in shape, getting there, and getting to the top, with just about everything to keep you out of trouble in-between. This is not a page turner for the professional mountain climber or the extreme sport fanatic. But for the average hiker with aspirations for a sunrise at the top of Africa, it's hard to imagine a better guide. Pay special attention to the tips for staying healthy - the authors (both from the Mayo Clinic) obviously know of what they write.

Summary: Climbing Mount Kilimanjaro
Review: As a middle-aged "regular guy" this book got me into the best physical shape I have ever been in. You don't want any serious surprises on a trip like this, and "Climbing Mount Kilimanjaro" prepares you with the right equipment, clothing, energy foods and most importantly ATTITUDE. I summited Kili three weeks ago and judging from what I experienced, it pays to be prepared. Great trip - great book!

Summary: A "how to" book on climbing to the Top of Africa
Review: For decades, I had promised myself to climb Mount Kilimanjaro when I turned 50. I am a careful planner, so I looked for books that would give me guidance. There were none available. It turns out that climbing Mount Kilimanjaro takes lots of planning, and for an average person like me, lots of physical conditioning.

It turned out to be the experience of a lifetime for me and my wife (Susan Stoddard). We had a wonderful time. If you are considering a climb to the Top of Africa, we would like to share our experiences, and our secrets, with you.

Review: I can't wait to go! I read this book on an airplane...unfortunately it was not headed for Africa...and it not only entertained me the entire flight, but it made me want to attempt what had otherwise seemed an impossible dream.

I'm glad I own a copy so I can keep it in my library as a reference when the time comes. Carmichael and Stoddard certainly seem to know what they're talking about and present it in a forthright and encouraging fashion.

Pick it up today...You'll be hooked, too!

Summary: Dreary
Review: I didn't think it was possible to make Kilimanjaro sound dull, but this author has tried very hard to. The Forewords etc are excellent -- but then they are written by other people -- it's just the meat of the book that's at fault. Some more practical advice would have been useful too. I climbed Kili in June this year and while this book came with me to the summit, it remained in my backpack the whole time. Nothing beats a good (human) guide, of course, but even if you do decide you need a guidebook, there are better ones on the market than this.

Summary: Great reading
Review: I have read several books on climbing this mountain, and found this one to be, by far, the most informative. It shed some light on several oversights that I had made from my trip in September. Recommended.

Summary: Not worth your time
Review: I've often thought about writing a book about a trip as a way to deduct the expense from my taxes, but I've refrained for fear that the result would end up like this book. Poorly written with very limited content, this book is of little interest and very limited use to anyone actually planning to climb Kilimanjaro. It's chief value is as personal account of the authors' climb, but you can find many similar accounts for free on personal websites everywhere.
