Rating: Summary: A Mountaineering Text Book Review: This book is a comprehensive overview of nearly all aspects of climbing and mountaineering, kind of like an undergraduate survey class, and I recommend it as a core part of any climber's reference library. I owned the third edition and recently purchased and read through (cover to cover) the seventh edition. Because the book covers all of climbing from simple one day rock climbs to technical multi-day expeditions in a variety of climates and conditions it cannot go into as much detail as books dedicated to specific aspects or types of climbing. For example, if you are an ice climber you would do well to follow this book up with a book dedicated solely to ice climbing. What this book does provide in an unparalleled format, is a thorough grounding in all basic climbing techniques, basic rescue procedures, elementary first-aid for mountaineering, geology and meteorology basics, and a variety of either useful things that will make anyone a more complete climber.
Rating: Summary: This is the Bible of Mountaineering Review: This book is like an advanced version of the Boy Scout's Handbook. Covers everything in a wide range of catagories, but is extreamly thorough. I recomend this book to anyone who rock climbes or does any extream snow sports. Memorize the theory and you will master the mountian!
Rating: Summary: A Must-Have for Mountain Enthusiats Review: This books covers everything related to Mountaneering - Clothes, Knots, Techniques, Safety. It is like a bible for mountaneers. I have carried a copy when went climbing and has been very useful. The best mountaineering reference available.
Rating: Summary: Great Reference Book Review: This is a great book to use as a climbing and mountaineering reference. It is packed full of information regarding almost any mountaineering subject. My main comment is that I consider this a mountaineering encyclopedia. --If I only had one book, then I would get the encyclopedia, but I prefer to read more in depth topics such as the "How to Climb" series by Long. I would get this as a reference, but get other books for specialized topics.
Rating: Summary: Possibly the best reference on mountaineering ever!! Review: This is by far the best reference book on all aspects of mountaineering, covering all the possible information a mountain reference book can, from wilderness basics, navigation or rock climbing and to snow geology, survival, rescue and leadership. It's not the best because it has all these topics covered, but also it has evolved through six remarkable editions, covering a wider range in each one!!If you have something to do with mountaineering, do not hesitate even for a moment to pick this piece, you won't be disappointed!!

Rating: Summary: A Book That Found Its Way Onto Many Outdoor Adventures Review: This is the book to have once you're ready to depart from the established trail. I've been reading "Freedom" since its early editions; in addition to being an excellent and entertaining course in general mountaineering, it's also a fabulous ready-reference. I've lost track of how many times I've looked up a particular knot, rappel technique, belay menthod, etc.etc.etc. Excellent sections on rock, ice, snow, and just about everything else. I can't imagine any mountaineering library being without it. You might want to pick up two copies; one is bound to be covered with dirt and water from use in the field!
Rating: Summary: THE GUIDE TO MOUNTAINEERING Review: This is the classic and essential guide to all aspects of mountaineering. This book tells you everything. A must have, whether you are a weekend climber or preparing for a full fledged expedition.
Rating: Summary: EXCELLENT! Cannot leave home without this book!! Review: This is the ONLY book you need! It's also inconceivable that one would venture into the hills without reading it first. There must be a thousand years worth of mountaineering wisdom in here. Buy it, read it, then go for a climb.
Rating: Summary: THE ref book to have on the subject. Review: When I first re-entered the world of climbing, about 4 months ago, I went into the local "outdoorsie" emporium (a GREAT store called BackWoods in Norman) and asked for the finest Swiss Seat they had. It only took half a thought for the youngish, very polite woman to have any clue what I was talking about. "You're looking for a harness." Was her reply. "And you'll want this, too." and she handed me this book. Ahhhh. . . Pure bliss. If only I'd known about this tome when I got into climbing the first time, I might not be getting "back" into climbing now, but just getting better. This book is indespensible.
