Summary: Get to know YOUR engine !!
Review: As a new boatowner knowing next to nothing about engines this book has helped me identify key parts of my own engine and explain what their functions are. The book provides clear troubleshooting procedures (hope I will not need those since I intend to follow the suggested maintenance procedures instead) and information on how to diagnose different symptoms.

The book is covering basic engine parts, more in depth explanations of engine parts, fuel system, how to troubleshoot start problems, diagnosing different sounds and symptoms, maintenance and repair procedures (probably more than most of us will want to perform ourselves - like opening up cylinders and decarbonizing the engine). I especially liked the chapter about engine selection and installation which discussed various aspects of hull, engine, exhaust and transmission fittings.

Illustrations are good and applicable accross engine brands. Warning: The book kept me awake several nights because I had to check things the very next day after reading a chapter.

Summary: Good book
Review: Gives a broad overview of diesel engines and systems, tons of illustrations.

Summary: Detailed and well written
Review: I bought this in conjunction with Peter Compton's book. I like booth. Calder is more detailed and more informative, but I find Compton easier to understand and more direct. If I have an engine problem I might start with Compton's book to narrow the possibilites down and Calder's book for detailed explanation. This book is somewhat redundant with Calder's "Boatowner's Mechanical and Electrical Manual" which is definitely a must have. Overall, great book and well worth the money. Would I buy again? Definitely

Summary: Know Your Diesel
Review: My copies of this book has grease stained fingerprints throughout. A lot of folks have told me they think this book is redundant, because much of the info is covered in Mr. Calder's Mechanical & Electrical Manual but this smaller book is easier to work with when working around your engine and the material is presented differently enough that the book is one I believe you should have if you live on a boat.

Summary: Great Pics and troubleshooting
Review: Pics and explainations are top notch. The troubleshooting is good too. Not to many CAT pics mostly Volvo and Perkins, still the fundamentals apply across all diesels. Very Handy

Summary: Top Flight Calder
Review: The book gives you the tech you need, in terms you can understand. Calder is very impressive in his ability to impart knowledge to the layman. Don't however, assume this is just fluff overview, because it truly is the down and dirty of how it works and how to maintain it.

Summary: If you have a Marine Diesel, you need this book
Review: This book is great! If you have a marine diesel, you should have this book as well as the factory manual for the engine. This book is the best!
