Rating: Summary: Tips for most any level Review: I've been playing golf for several years, and found several tips that were presented clearly, humorously, and, most importantly, which worked. The most enjoyable golf instruction manual you will find.
Rating: Summary: Ideal Book For The Beginner Golfer ! Review: Is a great golf book that covers all the important aspects of the game for the beginner. Includes how to choose the best clubs and golf equipment based upon your skill level and strength. In addition, Gary McCord advises the new golfer when playing on the course, when to use which club and how to get your best shot in an easy to understand format.
Rating: Summary: This book makes you want to "Just do it"! Review: The only reason I would not give this book a 10 is I have not read all the golf books there are. Gary McCord suggests some other books that I will read in the future. In this book you gain a real desire to take up golf and learn to play correctly. Gary McCord makes you feel that with some work even you can have a good game of golf. You get to feel some of Gary's comical personality in this book. This is definately not a dry technical manual. And not only is it a very good learning tool, you will also find it very entertaining. When you start reading the book it will become very hard to put it down. I highly suggest this as a first book for beginning golfers as Gary has successfully taken the mystery out of golf. - John Holm - "A beginning golfer by my own admission."
Rating: Summary: Great Book Review: There are more to these For Dummies books than many people would think. The author's sense of humor, knowledge, and clear descriptions combined with the easy to understand and follow, For Dummies format make for an informative, enjoyable, and useful book. I think this book would also be useful for intermediate golfers. The illustrations would be a good review.
Rating: Summary: Not everyone is a dummie Review: This book (I have the original version) is entertaining and useful in that it includes the whole golfing experience, from selecting clothes to on-course etiquette. But it is not anywhere near the only golf book you'll need. The photography used to illustrate technique is not as clear as it might be. The authors use a lot of space dropping names of celebrity golf pros they know and telling amusing stories. I found myself always looking for more detail, more physiology and more physics.
Golf for Dummies is very good for neophytes, but not enough for those who become enthusiasts.
Rating: Summary: Good Golf Book Review: This book has many tips on how to play better golf. The pictures are good and easy to follow. All in all a pretty good golf instruction book. If you really want an awesome book on golf instruction get:
The Ultimate Golf Instruction Guide: Key Techniques for Becoming a Zero Handicap Golfer or Better by Patrick Leonardi
isbn 1933023090
This last book showed me how to improve with techniques that are much easier to follow. My scores are now finally improving. In fact, every month since using this book, my scores have improved by about one stroke per month. I highly recommend it, nothing else on the market like Leonardi's book.
Rating: Summary: Lots of fluff before you get to what you really need to know Review: This book is not funny--full of not-funny jokes. (Um, who the hell is Dick Clark, anyway?) IDG tries to get you to buy their books by putting esoteric material in layman's terms, along with a liberal sprinkling of jokes. Some of their books are funny and well-written, this one is not. I do not recomend this book. It hasn't helped. I could have spent the money on another golf lesson. I am still reading through it, but it is slow going and painful. I can't afford another book. Too bad huh? Definitely go on a recommendation instead of buying blind.
Rating: Summary: Great book for a beginning golfer! Review: This is a great book for a beginner or someone not sure if they want to start playing golf. The book gives a brief overview of golf history, an explanation of golf equipment, and lessons on how to build a golf swing, and some tips on how to play the game. Although Gary McCord peppers this book with some corny jokes, his knowledge and enthusiasm for the game make the book a great overview for a beginner. I just recently started playing golf and the book gave me a quick and entertaining overview of the game. Although the lessons to build your swing are well written and informative, I would recommend looking for books devoted to teaching the golf swing, watching videos, or taking lessons from golf pro if you are serious. The instruction in the book is inadequate as a sole source of information for learning how to correctly swing a golf club. Get this book as an introduction, but find something else to learn a great swing.
Rating: Summary: Adds to a beginer's knowledge, but cannot teach the game. Review: This is a great book for a beginner, once he or she decides that another terribly frustrating hobby is needed in life. As noted, it gives an overview of the game, some of its history and the rules of etiquette . It will let one know about "playing through (with the mantra "Play fast"), and how to comport oneself at a country club. Like another, I picked up golf this past year, and the book gave me a brief overview of the game. I agree with another reviewer that the lessons to build your swing are well written and informative, but I disagree with the reviewer who suggests that the money spent on a good professional coach to learn the swing is better spent here. For that, no video, or book is a substitute for a good live teacher, and a few hundred buckets of balls.
Rating: Summary: Better than Idiot Guide and I liked that... DETAILED! Review: This is an excellent beginners book as well as a terrific reference book. I had also purchased the Idiot guide and thought it was great, this book is filled with alot more. I am referring to the 2nd Edition. Straight forward knowledge and definations with a host of pictures to illustrate. Break down of information is well organized and even goes so far as to tell you where to go for the most important information. For the beginner but also for a point of reference. Easy to read easy to understand and easy to put into motion. Previously I had chose between the Idiot Guide and the 1st Edition, and chose the Idiot Guide, if I had the choice now between the Idiot and 2nd Edition THIS WOULD HAVE BEEN THE ONLY BOOK PURCHASED. Fully detailed and excellent reference, sure to have a long shelf life.
