Rating: Summary: Looking To Improve Your Game? Review: As a relative beginner to the game of golf, I have been looking for anything and everything to improve my game. This book did it. After reading it once I cut 10 strokes from my game with future improvement almost guaranteed. I am on my third reading right now. I would recommend this book to anyone looking to increase their enjoyment of the game.
Rating: Summary: Read this more than once and you will understand... Review: The prose is a bit out-dated. The pictures are (actually) out of the 50's. But the fundamentals are there. Some will reach out and bite you IN CAPITAL LETTERS, and others must be gleaned from studying the pictures and reading the details (e.g., the right leg and knee on the backswing). But, the information you need is there. Read it. Know it. Live it. Hit lots of balls. You will see.
Rating: Summary: Best Golf Instruction Manual Ever Published Review: The basics never go out of style, which is why this book will be a perennial favorite among golfers. No fancy swing theories du jour. No promise to fix your slice in an afternoon. Just the basics, simply explained. The book breaks down the golf swing into five discrete components. For each component, ample pictures and descriptions are provided. Several of Hogan's concepts, most importantly the concept of keeping the club and arms beneath a plane, are essential teaching tools for virtually all golf instructors. For novice and experienced golfers, you should buy only one book of instruction. And this is the one.
Rating: Summary: 5 Stars Does Not Do This Book Justice! Review: Quite simply the single most valuable book a golfer looking to begin or master the golf swing can read. I have read the book three times and look forward to the fourth. It is a no nonsense instructional guide with detailed drawings and precise text. It reveals to the reader exactly what is necessary to enjoy the game of golf by mastering the necessary fundamentals of the proper golf swing. A must read for any serious golfer.
Rating: Summary: Great Book Review: Every literate golfer should be required to have a copy of this book in his/her library. This is a great book. Ironically, not really so much for the golf instruction. Rather more for the insight into the mind of the great Ben Hogan and his masterful inspiration for the great game of golf. It remains an inspiration to me. The man was something special and unique and he somehow captured it in this strange little book. The illustrations by Ravelli are beautiful art. I would say the section on the grip is the best. Every beginning amateur could profit from these simple concepts and benefit for the rest of their golfing carreer. The next time you are on the course, keep a mental tally of the really excellent golf grips that you observe. Then go back and re-read Hogan's chapter on the golf grip. You may begin to appreciate the game in a new light.
Rating: Summary: If I were on a desert Island... Review: I'd get a lot of work on my bunker play. But I'd also want this book with me. The illustrations alone are worth the paltry price. Also, it proves that a discussion of the golf swing does not have to be an epic tome. Hogans observations are consise, albeit technical, and packed with information. Multiple readings reveal new insight every time. In fact, it has been sometime since I read this book, I think I'll go read it again starting tonight. A MUST HAVE FOR ANY GOLFER WHO WANTS TO IMPROVE.
Rating: Summary: A classic that has withstood the test of time. Review: This is a classic how-to golf book. Written under the guidance of Ben Hogan, a professional who could actually practice what he preached! His reputation as a meticulous perfectionist is evident in the detailed descriptions of the golf swing. The outstanding illustrations provide the necessary visual reinforcement to the text. Any golfer who is trying to improve his or her game can accomplish this goal if they patiently apply Mr. Hogan's Five Lessons. In this case, good things do come in small packages!
Rating: Summary: A Classic Book Review: I think that this is a good book. I loved the discussion on swing planes, the set up and the follow through. Unfortunately, the chapter on the grip is a little dated. For a full swing, Hogan recommends a neutral grip with the "V" from each hand pointing at your chin. This grip robs you of a lot of distance in your shot because it restricts wrist cock at the top of the swing. It is similar to a continental grip in tennis. (Another outdated grip) Almost all the modern teaching on grips recommend the "V" of the right hand to point at your right shoulder and the left to point at your chin. This grip is similar to a two handed backhand grip in tennis. You will get more distance using this power grip. Given that half a century has passed and that almost all the information is still accurate, I still recommend buying this book.
Rating: Summary: If you buy any book on Golf, make it this one!!!! Review: I have been playing golf for about three years. I've taken some lessons, but never developed a clear understanding of the "Fundamentals" of golf until I read this book. I have always shot in the mid 90's and rarely (once or twice) in the upper 80's. After reading this book and making changes, I have cut almost seven (7) strokes off my game. My last two scores were 84 and 82 and I know I could be playing in the 70's in the very near future. Buy this book if you really want to improve you game!!!
Rating: Summary: The Best Ever! Review: The best piece of golf instruction ever put down on paper. This book has made me strike the ball with more authority and accuracy. A serious word of Caution; Read the book slowly and thoroughly. Take a club and practice what you read. Take your time! A book that every golfer should have by his bedside/desk etc etc.
