Rating: Summary: A MUST HAVE BOOK FOR EVERY GOLFER Review: GET THIS BOOK !!! Repeat GET IT NOW and it will, without a doubt IMPROVE YOUR GAME and outlook on golf 10 fold! I have had and read this book like a bible over the past 3 months and I will tell you unequivocally, It is simply the best book on what makes a golf swing a TRUE golf swing. I have been a golfer for 20 years and through all the articles I have read, any lessons I have taken, none have come close to breaking down what the mechanics of a golf swing truly are. This book takes you from the start to a finish of a solid fundamental golf swing. As every individual has their own style, I would recommend once you learn these basics, make your own minor adjustments to suit your own physical limitations due to factors such as flexibility and body size. Now I have to tell you, I am slow to comprehend and grasp new ideas but once I catch them, if they are indeed true, I embrace and preach upon them like a priest in the church. This book is a true awakening for a golfer and what it takes to make a real golf swing. The amazing results of this book and what a golfer actually experiences when making a true swing as a result of the study of this book are absolutely astonishing. You should make this book your BIBLE to a great golf swing. The results you see (and feel) will leave you in total awe of how simple a great golf swing is and how easily it can be accomplished. I endorse this book 100% and promise you will not be disappointed. Indeed you will be delighted and your game will see the dawn of a new day. 5 ***** book. A MUST for every golfer
Rating: Summary: Grip, stance, posture, swing... change everything! Review: For nearly thirty years, my golf game has been "respectable." I've hovered between a 15 and 20 handicap, content -- though not thrilled -- to play bogie golf. This year, that will change. This year, I will break 80. And next year, I will do so regularly. This book is the reason. From the moment I decided to forget everything I thought I knew about golf and start practicing Hogan's dictates -- from grip through downswing -- I noticed an immediate, undeniable increase in the power of my swing. I'm hitting every club in my bag, and particularly irons, with a distance and accuracy I've heretofore only dreamed of. If you learned that the position of the ball within your stance is dictated by the club you're playing, i.e., woods and long irons near the left foot, mid-irons in the middle, and short irons off the right foot, that's only half-right. Hogan explains everything, from grip to stance to line to a little-known word, "supinate," all of which will change your game if you are willing to forget what you think you know and listen to a true master. There are no easy fixes for mediocre golf, but Hogan proves that good golf needn't be complex. He simplifies the basics in an encouraging, assuring, positive style that builds confidence. I consult the book daily, and no matter what life throws my way, I make time to head out to the back yard with some wiffle balls (if not the driving range) every day, to further groove the "repeating swing" that Hogan, Herbert Wind and the precise drawings of Anthony Ravelli have given me, through this wonderful book. The best ten bucks you'll ever spend. Enjoy! Additional thoughts added December 2003 (above text was from April 2000): The review here from the dude in Florida claiming that this book is no good for the average golfer is only true if you want to REMAIN an average golfer. Just about everybody has the physical ability to do what Hogan advises in this fine book. He had no "innate physical abilities," as this misinformed reviewer claims; Hogan was in fact quite average in terms of athletic ability. He got good by hitting thousands and thousands and thousands of golf balls (Hogan himself said he "dug it [his golf game] out of the ground"), as you will learn if you read the story of his life by Curt Sampson, which is offered here on amazon. Not to put too fine a point on it, but it bears mentioning that Hogan was in a car accident at the peak of his career (he hit a bus head-on). Doctors said it would end his career, that he might never WALK again, let alone play golf. All he did was go on to win several more majors, despite playing with almost constant pain. This book has done everything for me that I hoped it would and more -- and it can do the same for you, if you're willing to do the work. Pay no attention to that Florida tripe. Rating: Summary: 5 Stars for 5 Lessons Review: This is the single most important golfing book you can buy. Forget all of the "golf channel" lessons you see on TV with some "expert" telling you how to swing the club. Mr. Hogan explains the game of golf in its most elementary forms. Everytime I read this book (it's quick and simple reading), I am able to improve my game (what little game I had to begin with). All kidding aside, the book breaks down the golf swing into elements. Mr. Hogan details every element of the swing through simple prose and exceptional illustrations and in the end explains how to piece them together.I am by no means a good golfer, but after having read this book, I was able to build a foundation on which I could improve my game. Ben Hogan's philosophy is simplicity. He truly believes that anyone with even the slightest amount of coordination can become a respectable golfer. A MUST BUY FOR ALL GOLFERS! Any golfer will tell you that there is always room for improvement!
Rating: Summary: Every golfer needs this book. Review: Beginners and high handicappers will treasure this book. Ben Hogan had the perfect swing so naturally he wrote the perfect book. The explanations and illustrations are very clear, very concise and correct. Best explanation of the grip and components of the golf swing I ever read. Better than my pro explained it.
Rating: Summary: What you need at any point in development Review: Probably the biggest barrier to people developing beyond a certain point in their game is not having a clear vision of what it is they should be doing through the whole swing. Instruction and video analysis gets you pointers on what you are doing wrong and what you are doing very well, but rarely what you are doing just right or just wrong. You then get thrown onto the practice tee or on the course and the thing you have in mind is how to correct one or two faults, while losing sight of your whole swing. The classic Five Lessons gives you Hogan's breakdown of the full swing, from grip through to the follow-through, and gives clear, simple pictures of what everything should look like at each stage. There is nothing technical about the explinations. They are all easy to understand, and each minor as well as major point is matched with illustrations to show how Hogan would have done it. This is probably be one of the best intro to golf books a person could buy, but is also good for intermediate and even advanced players. Short and to the point, a re-read on a regular basis should help set anyone's mind on what their golf swing should look and feel like. One note, however. This is only about the mechanics and execution of the full swing. Nothing here about putting, course management, or anything but the swing. More complete books are to be had, but none put the swing into a clearer light.

Rating: Summary: Timeless Instruction from a Master Review: This excellent teaching device found me at the right time, having mysteriously started struggling with my takeaway and back swing [right elbow flying out at the top!]. I poured through it in a night to search for the secret cure and I found it. I can't believe it took me 18 years of golf to discover this book. This really should be in every beginner's bag, to get his or her mechanics and fundamentals together, as well as any long time golfer who occasionally 'loses' it. It's quite a testament to its staying power to note that there are no reviews of less than five stars for this wonderful manual [my rating will be no different]. Hogan boils down the game to one important aspect, striking the ball. Grip, stance, setup, back swing, downswing are all meticulously verbally described, and then highlighted by amazingly detailed and accurate drawings. Written as a series of SI articles in the 50's, the teaching voice has lost none of its punch over the ensuing years. The gods are in the details, and I noted immediately in the setup section things I was doing to hinder the chain-reaction of his preferred swing. Left foot out a quarter turn, hmm, that's new but makes sense, elbows at hipbone at address, and arms very close to chest to allow the right elbow to fold properly. That's what I needed. His description and the images of the glass / back swing / downswing plane will provide appropriate visual clues during practice. I found his discussion of the waggle and supination of left hand on follow through also quite interesting. I've purchased copies of this for my long-time golfer mother and my girlfriend who's just taking up the game, hopefully they'll enjoy it as much as I did, and we can discuss Hogan's straightforward instruction with a common background understanding.
Rating: Summary: These people sound like golf infomercials. Review: There's only so much you can learn from a book. Ben Hogan basically invented the modern golf swing but I think lessons would be more helpful. Save your money and go play a round or two, its the best way to improve.
Rating: Summary: Instant Game Improvement Review: Not to be too overly gushy but this book revolutionized my golf game. I have shot in the 100+ range my entire life (35) and after reading this book a few times and practicing the techniques at the range I instantly started to shoot in the 90's. His instruction is simple to understand and the pictures are a great help to visualize the actions. I know refer back to this book at least once a month if my swing starts to get out of whack. It is the best $10.00 you will ever spend on your game.
Rating: Summary: This book is great! Review: Everyone should buy this book! It really works. I noticed some people, most notably a man from Florida, almost insult the book. Come on, surely you've all read what Hogan said: "I do genuinely believe this: THE AVERAGE GOLFER IS ENTIRELY CAPABLE OF BUILDING A REPEATING SWING AND BREAKING 80, if he learns to perform a small number of movements.." Ben Hogan was apparently a perfectionist, and noticeably had strong beliefs in his philosophy of the golf swing. I don't think he'd put it in his book if he didn't KNOW FOR SURE it was true. Remember this was the book people had nagged him to write for years. He probably tested the instruction on lots of people - maybe even amateurs and people of all shapes and sizes. Hogan was obviously looking for a way to cure his pull-hook, and he did this by trial-and-error, over many, many years. I think if I practiced day after day for years, I'd know the golf swing and feel insulted if somebody questioned my ideas. It's obvious all modern teaching is based upon Ben Hogan's method. He hasn't wrote a book on his style - he did say in the foreword the fundamentals just look different on different people - he wrote about THE fundamental movements which make a powerl, correcting, repeating swing. It's just idiotic to say it only works for Hogan. Maybe the man from Florida was saying what he did because he learned to do something wrong instead of reading properly. Buy this book!
