It uses items that most golfers have and you can get started quickly seeing results the next time you play. You can be as good as you decide by following the excellent drills and by doing the suggested practice. Dave has tought some of the worlds best short game players and his system is well doucemented. A nice feature is you can go as far as you decide in the improvement of your short game.
Rating: Summary: Very well written, but not always practical Review: I was expecting this book to be really dry and boring, but was pleasantly surprised. I found it really interesting and liked the occasional comments and stories about professional golfers that Dave Pelz has worked with. Obviously, this book will appeal to someone with more of an analytical viewpoint. If you are simply interested in a how-to guide that will allow you to improve your game overnight, this probably isn't the book for you. I was interested in understanding how things worked, so this book was fascinating to me.Has this book helped my game? Yes and no. I already believed that my short game was the key to scoring better, so a lot of the book made sense to me. I did buy an additional 3 wedges just as the book recommends. I am also using the chipping technique/style outlined in the book with great success. However, I have not come close to following all of the recommendations in the book. Some of them will be hard because I don't have access to an area where I can accurately measure yardage with my wedges. That's the only downside to the book. Some of the techniques are beyond the average golfer, or require more time and resources than is practical. That's probably not the books fault though. For me, this book is a long term guide. It is thorough enough to help the really low handicappers in nauseating detail. For now, I can only take advantage of some of the recommendations. As I get better over the years, I expect to keep going back to the book to find new ways to lower my score.
Rating: Summary: Dave Pelz short game bible Review: Dave I am writing to offer a few comments. Recently I purchased your Short game Bible and I proceeded to devour the material as well as practicing the info involved. I have already taken the short game handicap test three straight weeks and I intend to do this once a week from here on in. July 5th I shot a 77. Four days later I shot 73. Three days later I posted a par 72. I only used 11 putts on the front nine. I had seven putts within the four foot range. I am 69 years old, in excellent health and I will shoot my age before Christmas. Count on it! See you later, Dave! Cheers, Tom P.S. My short game handicapo right now is 7. Real soon it will be alot lower than this.
Rating: Summary: Wedge Boot Camp Review: I completely agree with Dave Pelz that the short game is the scoring game, and that everybody can learn to use their wedges more effectively. However, his system of wedges is just plain silly. 50 degree pitching wedge, 55 degree sand wedge, 60 degree lob wedge and 64 degree x wedge. I have all these wedges and use them effectively for a given situation, but Pelz advocates using them depending on distance. Who in their right mind would take a full swing 45 yards from the pin with a 64 degree wedge? Thinning the shot would blast the ball 60 yards past the pin, over the green and probably out of bounds. This is the heart of his system. If you can't stomach full swings with a lob or a x wedge its not a system for you. Purely struck lob wedges are intoxicating, no doubt, but distance control is darn near impossible, even on the best lies. This book is chock full of great information about various lies and conditions, but is also overly long. There are about a hundred pages about Dave Pelz, how great his methods are, and about all the pros he's helped (Tom Kite). He comes off like an egomaniac, and when you think about how many coaches Tom Kite has had in his life, it really sounds incredulous when Pelz pats himself on the back about his successful work with the '92 US Open Champ. So if you'd like to read about long winded ramblings about the making of Dave Pelz (the man the myth, the school) and have the hand-eye cordination of Phil Mickelson (which would allow you to fully master the lob wedge) then this book is for you! Jim Mclean's Idiot's guide to the short game is much better. Also, Mclean's book doesn't try to hard sell overpriced learning aids.
Rating: Summary: I went from the 80's to shooting par in one short month Review: If you're short game is so-so and you want to maximize efficiency around the greens, this book will show you how. For example, the other day I was out playing and faced with a difficult downhill 30 yard chip with a couple of small mounds in my way. I remembered one of Pelz's tips: when chipping around undulating terrain, always aim for the low spots. If you hit it too hard the ball will hit against the hill and counter your overestimation. If you hit it too soft, the ball will release off the downward slope of the hill and counter your underestimation. If you hit it perfectly, it will hit the low spot you aimed for and play out as you planned. I took what what normally be a bogey or double bogey and made an up-and-down par. This book gives more than just tips on short game technique, it gives a comprehensive philosophy on golf from a hundred yards and in. It's a must!
Rating: Summary: The best book i have ever read about golf! Review: This is simply the best book about the short game i have ever read! I have moved from HcP 54 to HcP 10,5 in less than 6 month. This would not have been possible without this book. I have placed the book beside my bed, and read in it several times a week. I have read the entire book many times by now, but as you get better, new tricks get relevant. I just love the way that Pelz prove everything. All arguments are based on pure science, so its not like "do so, because i say it". This book is a must!
Rating: Summary: appropriately titled Review: Great name for the book because this is truly a golfing bible. Helped my game tremendously, thankyou Mr. Pelz!
Rating: Summary: Great Book - Look beyond the constant sales pitch! Review: This Book is great. More great information than you can ever believe. I was annoyed however by Dave's constant selling of his schools and overpriced products. I still recommend the book, however it would have been a five star plus if it wasn't for the hard sell.
Rating: Summary: Great short game reference Review: Takes the complexity out of the short game. Easy reading, makes the complex simple.
Rating: Summary: A lower handicap for Christmas? Review: The best and fastest way to a improve your handicap and shoot consistent scores. I found even when my "power" game swing (~115yds) isn't working, I can almost always scramble and post a decent score. Before learning and ingraining the Pelz principles, if I didn't hit fairways and greens I was done, end of story. Now I can survive and when my power game swing is "on" I'll post great scores. Read this book, but more importantly practice the techniques and make sure to practice them perfectly-- get a video camera or have somebody watch that knows the techniques. If you practice and execute what the Bible preaches you'll be seeing lower and lower scores-- it's as simple as that.
