Rating: Summary: nine o'clock?, 12 o'clock? 3 o'clock?.... Review: Golf instructions and gizzmos can generaly be divided into two catagories. First there is all the stuff that doesn't work. Second is all the rest of the stuff that works but that 99 percent of golfers cannot do. Dave has zeroed in on the later. You can practice what he preaches until the cows come home and your game will probably get worse. Why? Because most of us have LOFT. What is LOFT? Lack of Friggin' Talent.
Rating: Summary: A little Pelz goes a long way Review: I was disappointed with this book. I expected a lot more insight into what makes a short game click. I found all the tables and charts "scientifically proving" what is pretty common sense to anyone who has played golf for awhile pretty useless. I don't really need to know that a 9 iron will roll 23.7% less than a 7 iron when pitched from 32 yards into an uphill slope. What I wanted to know was more "how" to hit that shot, and hit it cleanly and consistently, than the physics behind how the ball rolls. It's not that the information provided isn't useful, it is, and I do refer back to the book from time to time. But calling it a "bible" is a stretch, in my opinion. I also found Pelz's nerdy "this is science so of course it's right, you dummies" demeanor irritating, and less than profound. In short, I thought that the book could have been about 1/3 as long without losing anything of significance. What seems to the author's main point of originality is his system of using various lofts and swing lengths to gauge distances accurately. While that idea has some merit, it could have been covered in little over a chapter or two.
Rating: Summary: Dave Pelz's Short Game Bible: Master the Finesse Swing and L Review: As a former collegiate golfer who has thrown away countless strokes from within 100 yards, Dave's long hours and years of research that are comprised in this book are amazing and truly beneficial. From someone who can hit it 300+ yards, I truly know that you drive for show and chip and putt for dough. Even though the golf swing is a continual work in progress, I now have a foundation from which to build a solid short game (something that I have never had before and it showed - where was this 15 years ago??). Subsequently, I have turned the weakest part of my game into one of my strongest. A very interesting read and an invaluable reference tool.
Rating: Summary: A system that will make a big difference in your game Review: Hey, no one likes to waste strokes on short shots. Those strokes count. Like, who is on the green in regulation most of the time? Pitching and chipping from off the green and inside 100 yds. is critical for anyone without a long drive or wayward approaches with long irons or fairway woods. This has made a big difference in my scoring. One thing that will [tick] anybody off is stubbed chips and fat pitches. This book is a system for determining your pitching distances with 4 wedges and 3 swing lengths. You got to know how far you hit your wedges and this system takes out the guesswork. I have read this book 3 times already and its better than any other golf book available. You can't get a long game from a book, so don't even try. Go to a pro. But you can greatly improve your short game on your own.
Rating: Summary: Dave Pelz's Short Game Bible Review: As a novice golfer, this is well worth the time and effort to read and practice. Pelz techinques are quite good, with less golf lingo and more examples of how to perform on the course. The book has excellent sections on various parts of the short game -- with lots of practice / training tips. As with all of Pelz's book, the material is assembled in an excellent format with lots of photos. I believe every golfer should have this book.
Rating: Summary: Old Testament AND New Testament - A Revelation. Review: Great way to get the short game in perspective! Sometimes tedious with could have been shortened, but Pelz knows his stuff! No index, so going back to what you want is disorganized. Get it and read it in small doses - there is a ton of valuable information. Dave is probably the smartest guy to ever come out of Youngstown, Ohio.
Rating: Summary: Dave Pelz's Short Game Bible Review: If you can take a bucket of balls and hit 90% of your wedge shots into a circle of 20-30 feet diameter, read this book. If you cannot it still offers much to think about, but you may not find what you are looking for. It is a 5 star book for the low single figure handicap player. It is a 3 star book for the average golfer.
Rating: Summary: Great science-based approach Review: If you're committed to lowering your average score, Pelz's scientific approach really produces results. Despite its length, it's a fast read and filled with wisdom on the short game shots that you'll encounter most. I did, however, find his coverage of the bump-and-run shot a little weak. Regardless, this book will increase your confidence and that, coupled with Pelz's suggested techniques, will shave strokes off your score.
Rating: Summary: The Short Game is the Scoring Game Review: Dave Pelz starts this anecdotal exploration of the game of golf from 100 yards in to just off the putting green by describing his career in golf, and telling the story of how he discovered that the key to money earnings on the PGA tour was not ball striking ability, not driving distance, greens in regulation, fairway percentages, or even putting, but pitching, chipping, and the rest of the short game. He spends a lot of pages bragging about all his pro golfer students, and then he starts teaching. At last, the good stuff. Pelz tells the story of how he discovered, by observing his pro golfer students, the best way to play the short game in the most accurate and repeatable way. And he tells how every golfer can choose clubs and practice his or her short game in order to improve it. Will it turn every golfer into a Seve Ballesteros or a Tom Kite of the short game? No. Does it contain everything that a golfer needs to make the short game the strongest part of their game? Yes. I have seen other books on the short game but haven't bothered to buy them. They might list more trick shots, but none compare to this one.
Rating: Summary: Outstanding work Review: This is best, most practical book on golf that I have ever read. Pelz expains why the shots are needed, what technique to use, how to execute, and what the results should be. The instruction contained enabled me to reduce my handicap by two strokes, after I thought I had reached my limit. The book doesn't talk down to you. It is well written and easy to understand for golfers at all levels.
