Summary: Could Krakauer get any better?!!! NO WAY!
Review: After reading John Krakauer's "Into the Wild" and "Into Thin Air", I never imagined he could write anything as interesting, fascinating, and inspirational...but he proved me wrong! "Eiger Dreams" is a wonderful book full of short stories to keep you turning the pages (even on busy days when you don't think you have time...you just can't help it!). Krakauer brings alive unbelievable reality with his incredible style and entertaining insights. I just keep hoping that another Krakauer book will arive on the shelves soon, because...man, I think I am addicted!!!

Summary: John Krakauer never ceases to entertain me!!
Review: After reading Krakauer's "Into the Wild" and "Into Thin Air" I couldn't help myself to read another by him. I didn't think there could be another book as fascinating, inspirational, and entertaining as the other two. Boy, did he prove me wrong. "Eiger Dreams" is a series of short adventure stories that kept me turning the pages (even at work, oops!). Krakauer's world is unbelievable, yet so real. This a great book of short stories that you can quickly cram into even a busy day. Thanks, John...keep up the good work!!

Summary: Krakauer shows risk as a means to growth
Review: Eiger Dreams is a testament to Jon Krakauer's versatility as a writer. He explains the strange lure of the sport (and subculture) of climbing with a minimum of technical lingo. He also deftly reveals the human side of several real-life characters whose exploits could appear like the adventures of comic-book superheros in lesser hands. Krakauer's finest moments, however, come when he relates his own close calls, near misses and sometimes ill-advised adventures in the mountains. His pieces "Eiger Dreams," "Club Denali" and "The Devils Thumb" are, for my money, among the best non-fiction to writing to be found anywhere. Highly recommended!

Summary: Sweet Dreams
Review: Eiger Dreams is a very engrossing collection of short stories; Krakauer is so descriptive that I felt as if I had almost partaken in the adventures myself. He also is very humorous at times.

Summary: A great read for those at sea level and rising
Review: How to do justice to a writer like Krakauer....well, he's such a good writer that I feel any review I write would suffer compared to the source. Nevertheless, here I go.

This is Krakauer's first book. It's a collection of his previously published articles on mountaineering (save the last one about Devil's Thumb which was written for the book.) What a gread read too whether you are an afficionado of the sport or, like me, you've never seen a pair of crampons in your life (by the way, those are a set of spikes climbers strap to their boots to support themselves and prevent slipping on icy slopes.) Some of the famous peaks that make an appearance here include K2, Mt McKinley, and the titular Eiger. Throughout you will read about some of the eccentric personalities in the international climbing community, personal triumph and inspiration, offshoots like bouldering and waterfall climbing, and horrific tragedy.

If you read Into Thin Air, you'll be surprised at how funny this book is. Krakauer displays a wry, self-deprecating wit in several of these stories-something the somber subject matter of the latter book didn't permit. The last one, about his decision to solo the Devil's Thumb in Alaska in his early twenties is hysterical.

Anyone who can make a story about being tentbound or the inventor of the perfect ice axe riveting deserves attention. If you are on the fence, just go ahead and get this book. It's definitely worth it.

Summary: An excellent read!
Review: I had never heard of Jon Krakauer before I encountered him on the front page of the Amazon site. Eiger Dreams is a collection of short autobiographical stories concerning mountaineering exploits. I found his style clear and direct, and ha captured a freewheeling spirit totally in keeping woth the subject matter. I enjoyed the book immensely. If you too enjoyed this, then I recommend two books by an English climber, Joe Simpson, called 'Touching the Void' and 'This Game of Ghosts'
